How many old popups are still standing ?

i have a 1974 Nimrod i am the second owner

just used it for the first time great camper
 
3 bed pull out ,canvas is in good shape roof has a couple of tears but i am looking into getting those fixed and then i am going to redo the interior its still all original with bright yellow flower patterns.

The neat thing about old campers (for me, anyway) is the way they are not stuck on the current manufacturers' design concepts.

You really don't have to have one bunk end on the front and one on the back!  You really don't have to have the door on the side!  If they would learn that, they just might come up with a few more interesting floor plans.

Unfortunately I don't think we will ever see campers like this again.  It all comes down to money.  It's expensive to deviate from the current floor plans.  If they started building pups that you enter from the rear, that would mean carrying not only the current box, but also the rear door box.

I frrl that the only way we will see this type of thing again is if someone builds it themself.

Awesome! I have a 70's model Bethany!  The thing needs a new canvas but otherwise its awesome!

We bought a 1979 Lionel L355.  Canvas is in excellent condition and the interior has been updated somewhat.  It has an icebox but we opted for two coolers which do the job admirably.  We polished up the aluminum siding, sanded any rust spots, repainted where necessary and too be safe, waterproofed the canvas.  It sleeps six and is quite adequate for hubby, me and Sam (our cocker spaniel).  Loads of room.
We have just returned from a 2 day trial run..dry camp.
It rained buckets, the wind blew nasty cold and a neighbors campfire doused us with acrid smoke!
Still, our purpose was met.  No leaks, solid and stout thru the wind and our deep cell battery and inverter supplied the cooking and ran the small heater.  We were warm and toasty and well fed!! lol
We are from Vancouver Island and are planning our next outing to Prince George BC next week.
We found so much good information in the posts that our first experience in popup camping provided us with information we sure needed.  
We did not put the awning up, because of the wind warning, even though we had checked it out, cleaned and repaired any damage, it was the only part of the Lionel we haven't used yet.
Leveling is still a challenge, but we're getting there...

We own a 74 Puma and I love it.  I just finished modding the interior.  Put down new paint and laminate flooring.  It has everything we want and need, I just like making it more "me".  I think that is 1/2 the fun of owning an older PU.  Good luck and happy camping with yours.

I will have to get back to you on the pics, but I just bought (and spent a night) in a '77 Starcraft.  My first experiencing in "camping" will be spending 2 months in my parents backyard in MO with my 6yo DS and 4yo DD as I help them through her cancer treatments.  

As soon as I get pics, I will put it up.  Spent $1600 on this.  Original interior I believe because it has the '70's lime green through out.  Supposed to have a 6 yo canvas, but I have already found several areas I need to patch.

I can't wait to learn everything you guys know about fixing this thing up for my family to enjoy in WY when I get back home.

I'm not even sure how old our popup is.  I can't find anything on the net for it but do know it is a Parkette Deluxe made in Alberta.  It must be at least 30-35 years old.  It is a two man job to put up as it comes without a crank mechanism and we have redone the floors and some of the upholstery.  We also repainted it from green to silver.  It has tears in the old canvas but there is no mold and we took it on 3 extremely rainy trips last year.  It does have an electric heater, but little else.  We recently bought a Fleetwood Cheyenne with pretty much all the trimmings.

Of all the different posts, this is my favorite one.  I love seeing pics of the old vintage PU's.  IMO those who are able to keep these old beauties in such fine shape deserve the utmost respect. Thanks much and keep'em coming!
