Can anyone tell me if purchasing a membership to the Good Sam Club is worth it?  We can't get past their home page without paying for a membership.  We wanted to check out their campsites before becoming a member.  Any feedback, comments, etc. would be appreciated!!!

There've been other threads about this.  Our last pilgrimage to Camping World revealed $2.50 memberships to Good Sam.  At that price, I still could not ascertain its value.

Others have posted that joining gives one huge "benefit" -- it guarantees one thing for sure... more junk mail.

Billy Bob

We got the $2 membership thru Camping World and haven't be able to use ANY of the so called benefits yet.

I called for a quote on RV insurance and they were TWICE the amount of the insurance we have. Oh their insurance is GMAC insurance, big deal.

And yes I have a LOT more junk mail since joining. If it was only $1 next time I would pass.

Offagain, We have been members for a very long time and have never been dissapointed. The people that get out there and camp and not make excuses for why they didn't go are the ones who benefit. I know some campers that save 400.00 every year, just for being a member. Some people are going to do things their way just because they dont know. I have been checking in and have stood behind campers that had no discounts at all and had to pay full pop.You feel good when you save money. If you read the privacy statement you'll see where you can opt out so they dont sell your information. I dont get anymore junk mail then my neighbor, he is not a member. The monthly magazine is pretty cool, lots of tips, good articles, etc. I would absolutly say go for it and utilize those savings. Look into yourself, call em and ask for a free trial membership. Good luck.

Camping in Mexico, Canada, and anywhere outside the USA is very, very cool!

Billy Bob

Well it's Tuesday I "think" we have done everything possible to make our TOUR USA trip a successful one. The TV has been cleaned inside and out including Armor All and a good paste wax. New tires, extra-extra tranny cooler, tranny temp gauge and the tranny fluid changed out. I also change the oil with Mobil One Extended Mileage Oil so I hope not to have to do it again until I return. New air filter and a newly installed cabin filter (the Escape didn't come with one). I also installed new front brake pads (super heavy duty Semi-Carbon) and new rotors. My Escape hasn't looked this good since I brought her home from the dealer.

I made a few modifications to our Santa Fe but nothing like some of you guys have done.

We leave on Thursday for a 5-6 week trip including Mackinaw City MI, Duluth, MN, Grafton, SD, Sioux Falls SD, Custer SD, Buffalo WY, Cody WY, YELLOWSTONE NP, Salt Lake City UT, ZION NP, North Rim GC, Cortez Co, Cripple Creek CO and then finally heading east with no reservations.

I just want to thank all you good people here on this forum that had answers to my many questions. I am sure you have made our trip more enjoying to us.

So I will be hanging out here until Wed night and come Thursday morning we cut across Ontario into MI. I really hope all of you have a great camping season.

Thanks Again,
Bob

What did you save money on when using the Good Sam membership?  I visted the local CampersWorld in Bolingbrook and found it a pretty big disappointment.  Everything was "overpriced" and tailored to RV's (the big ones) and not Pop-UPs.  They hardly had any parts for Pop-ups.  I was looking into a possible screen-in porch for my popup and some hoses...    They took one look at me and just gave me a "we don't carry hardly any parts for Popups" in stock.  Go to your Fleetwood dealer if you need parts for your Popup.

People still shop at " the members price, your price club?".You have got to be kidding me?. You nailed that right on the head! our last trip out was for 8 nights at 33.50 x 10%, well you do the math. We could of used a number of discounts AAA etc, but our Good Sam membership automatically entered us in contest for a folding bike in which we won. msrp was 135.00. Its a shame that only a few onliners for pup parts exist.

Billy Bob

You can also save money with a KOA card which is much cheaper than a membership to Good Sam and KOA campgrounds are much more plentiful.

BTW not long (less than one month) the BIG discount for being a GOOD SAM member got discontinued which was saving 2 cents for every gallon at a Love's. But they are "working" on another gas discount plan. Haven't heard from them yet and don't really plan on it.

KOA campgrounds are notoriously expensive and the sites are small. The national average for a full hookup, backin space at KOA is 37.50. Thats for 2 people only. If you have kids its 3.00 each on top of that. The national average for a Good Sam affiliated park is 28.00. There are currently 415 KOA parks and over 1700 Good Sam Parks. I think someone should do "their" homework before submitting replies for people that are just getting started in camping.

Billy Bob

My homework has been done and well done if I might add.

We have reservations at the following KOA Kamps

Emmett, MI - $21.24

Cripple Creek, CO $32.50

Cortez, CO $26.10

For a average of $26.61 which is well below your Good Sam average.

I am not making stuff up but rather REAL reservations for our up coming trip. ;)

Go to the Good Sam site and see for yourself. Type in Emmett, MI and it recommends the KOA Kampground that I am going to. However, with my KOA Kard I get a better discount. Same with Cripple Creek, Co and Cortez, CO. :yikes:

You see there really ain't any Good Sam Campgrounds but rather campground affiliations to Good Sam. The complete opposite in a KOA Kampground.  :eyecrazy:

I'll stick with my KOA Kard that only cost $14 compared to Good Sam at $19. That's 5 bucks right off the bat in saving.

But with all that said I would rather camp at National Parks or state parks where I get a even better discount. :D

You're homework is obviously not done billyboob. The KOA national average is substantially higher then Good Sam affiliated parks. Its documented, and common knowledge to those of us in the business. You have obviously never sat thru a KOA franchise seminar. If you did you wouldn't be giving some new camper bogus info. The first thing out of their mouths is we are higher because ...........Its like the price of things, there are set prices and people like you will pay it, this I promise. I grew up in a family which owned a KOA for many years. Franchise restrictions kept the GOOD SAMMERS out because we could not except the card. When was the last time you saw a KOA rally? Never. Sponser a race? Never. Have a ward in a Childrens Hospital named after you? Never. KOA is about 110% profit, if you dont believe it,sit down with 1 of the owners on your trip. My family is now affilliated with 2 Good Sam parks and we have offered a discount to people with KOA cards, try that  at KOA with your Sam card. I hope it stays dry on your little trip.

Sticks and stones moron. I was trying to imagine you with a personality billy boob, just wasnt able to. I am so sorry that I stepped on your pitifully small ego, I really am. I am well aware that it takes all kinds of people, including the idiots, and tow truck drivers to make the world go around. After your last reply I went and researched some of your threads. The AAA call? You should of stayed with the tow truck driver thing, sounds like the perfect occupation for individual of your stature. You guys only have to count to 6 or was it 7 I forget. But anyway I am sorry if I offended anyone else. Maybe Billyboob wasnt told as a kid he was stupid? Maybe. Maybe he could of stayed in school and finished the 8th grade, just maybe. Well moron, its a shame you failed at life and are so rude. Have fun on your little trip. We will be thinking of you, and please think of me.LOL

PS: Do you need a loan for the kids education? I know your not scamming that too?
