Gonna try out some Deep Sea Fishing this weekend .  My friend chartered a boat in San Diego and we will take it down to Mexican waters to fish.  I have never done this before (always wanted to) so it should be a trip.  Hopefully I won't puke, but who knows, that's what dramamine is for.

Lori here:  Mythbusters did a show on effective remedies for sea sickness.  Forget the dramamine.  I have two words for you, Bri:  Ginger Pills.Have fun!  Dave and I used to go out of Dana Point Harbor with my mom in the summertime.  Have Dave tell you the one about mom's halibut. :)

Good luck Brian. I go Albacore fishing out of San Diego every year.

IMHO, it's a little early in the season for a good trip. I hope that you do well. They've been catching a lot of Yellowtail.

Here's a good website to see the daily catch out of SD:
http://www.eventsonline.com/fland/catch.php

The trick to avoiding sea sickness is to not go below for the first hour or two of the trip. Spend as much time as possible on deck, watching where you are going while leaving port. Once out at sea, go to bed and go to sleep.....NO ALCOHOL. If you take Dramamine, take it 1 hour before leaving and again when you wake up. If you start feeling sick DO NOT take more Dramamine (it's tooooo late). It will only make you sicker and it is guaranteed to come up. Trust me, I spent 14 years at sea and have had literally hundreds of sea going crew. Most of them got sick because they didn't take my advice. The ones that did, didn't get sick. A sure cure for sea sickness is steering the boat. Don't be shy about walking up to the bridge and asking. The skipper may be very happy to have an extra hand and an additional pair of eyes. That gives him a break.

Get up when you here the engines shut down and bait your hook. Try to be the first hook in the water.

NO ALCOHOL !!!!!:yikes:    I may have to re-think this fishing thing.  Seriously, I don't plan on drinking at all be it my first time out and all.  Plus, I'm not sure if this is the same boat my friend chartered before but if it is the beers cost like $4.50 ea.  If I'm paying that much for a beer there better be topless women dancing somewhere.

Thanks for all the tips everyone.  I  will report the outcome when I get back.

I used to do a lot of multi day fishing trips out of SD and took Bonine. Never got sick. I'm jealous of your trip. I still have all my gear and may do another alby trip in the future.

Wavery, let me know when you're planning on going out of SD. I'll see if my social director will let me go.

Will do.

Fishing has been lousy the last couple years:
http://www.eventsonline.com/fland/catch.php

In 2004 we did really well. Last year, we got skunked.

I always take my DW (she loves to fish and I love her). I don't need to spend $300 for a day & a half (200 mile) boat ride. I've been on plenty of those in my life. I watch the daily fish count pretty closely. If I see that they are hitting pretty strong, we go that night. Our trips tend to be pretty spur-of-the-moment. If you can deal with that, you're welcome to come.

PM me with your phone number or email addy if you are interested. I'll keep you posted as the season progresses.

I made it back!  Man what good time that is.  No sea sickness for me at all.  Not so good for some others though, Saturday the seas were insane! 12 to 14 foot swells, one guy got on the boat, about 45 min. into the boat ride out to where we were going to fish he lost it. From that moment on he laid down and never got up. Basically he paid $75.00 for a nap . The Yellowtail were not biting,(this is the fish of choice among fisherman) and it wasn't just our boat, nobody in the fleet caught one.  In the two days of fishing we did,  I caught 14 Barracuda and 9 Sand Bass, this did not include fish that got off my line, etc., so it was still a great first time as far as I was concerned.  Yesterday, all 30 people on our boat caught their limit on Sand Bass, so morale was really high and everyone was having a ball.  If you ever have a chance to go......do it. Maybe we can set up a SCCampers fishing trip. We can camp down the street at Campland on a Friday night, get up on Saturday and do a 1/2 or 3/4 day.  I can't wait to do it again.  Kristi has always wanted to Ocean fish so I think I should take her.  I'd be doing it for her though............

I'm glad that it was a good trip.

Where did you go? Did they sit off of one of the islands or just head straight South, out to sea? I get the impression that they must have gone to the islands if you were catching Sand Bass. Although, there are a few banks out there that will net Sand Bass.

It seems that it's gotta be fairly calm for the Yellowtail to bite, they're fairly timid. Barracuda are aggressive and surface if there is a breeze that is kicking up white caps.

I'd be game for a group "Fish-out" but not this year. All of a sudden we are up to our eyeballs in Alligators. Besides, if I'm going fishing, tuna or Dorado have to be biting :D . We'll have to see what August brings. So far, this looks like the worst year on record for Albacore. I sure wish that you could have caught a few of those. They are real fighters and great eating.

I'm in too! They have 1/2 day fishing trips out of Dana Point Harbor. Lori and I used to go at least once every year during the summer. One year Wynn caught an 8 lb. halibut. It was fish tacos for a week. Good eats!!
