Just got back from Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland. It was about 1200 miles round trip. I was towing my hybrid which I estimate weighs about 4400lbs the way we have it loaded. The bed (8')of my truck was full and with DW, DD and her friend, my grand daughter and myself in the cab. I towed at 60MPH unless the speed limit was lower than that.

I averaged ~16MPG for the trip which is considerably better than I ever did with my gas Dodge truck.I hand calculated the mileage because the trip computer is always low due to a couple of mods done to the truck.

WOW, you have to be happy! That's almost as good as we get going 70 ;) .

So...how was the trip?

How was Assateague?  Tell us about it.

You can hook the hybrid to the back of your van and see if you still get that well. :D

Assateague was great. We had breezy days and temps in the low 80's all week. We had one night with about 1/3 inch of rain but inland MD they had up to a foot.

Kind of nice to go to a National Park and stay where there are no hookups, gamerooms, pools or other manmade distractions. My daughter and her friend got to try their hand at crabbing and actually caught a couple. They did well to stay entertained without all of the amenities we all think we need.

Of course having the solar panels on the roof made it a little easier. Watched the news at 11PM every night. My 4 year old grand daughter watched a couple of DVD's during the trip. Mostly when she got tired and napped.

The horses were plentiful on the second half of the week, didn't see too many the first couple of days. We took one day and went to Salisbury MD to their Zoo and one day to Frontier Town and their kids waterpark. Frontier Town also has a CG but we liked staying near the ocean.

Had a storm move thru with high winds that destroyed my screenroom and ripped the awning off of a Viking popup across from us. Several tents were knocked down as well. It happened around midnight and I tried Screenroom Sailing, kind of fun but when the wind slows you get dropped to the ground. Actually was trying to disassemble the screenroom before it took out my truck. I got lifted off the ground and deposited on top of my daughters bike. Only got a scraped elbow. Was kind of funny after it happened.

We once again watched the horses eat someones food that had left it ou on the table. They will hoof a cooler open if you don't bungie it closed.

Thanks.  The screenroom sailing sounds like a sport I'd rather not participate in.  The crabbing's a different story.  Sounds like a great place.  Hope I get there soon myself.

NO WAY!  That's why we're still camping A style, it's hard to give up the gas mileage not changing when we're towing. At $3 + a gallon, our little Aliner is starting to look better every day to us.

Sounds like it was a nice trip for the whole family.  That would be you Paha Que room? Bummer.

Just one question.... was it more fun screenroom sailing  or  wading in the river with the gators?

I took the kids to Assateague and camped in the National Park this early summer.  First day was wonderful, sunny skies, gentle breeze, cool.  Second day was a mess...the rain started early morning and only got worse throughout the day...winds picked up to howeling status and the rain was pouring.  We got about 5 inches in 12 hours.  I too fought with my add a room, but I won.  The next day we found out that the storm was called Tropical Storm Alberto.  But anyway, we had a great time and l just love it there.  The horses are so fun to watch and the crabbing is great too.  I always feel so renewed after going there.

No it was an EZ-UP style screenroom. I think Dicks Sporting Goods is going to give me a new one for free. They mislead me to get me to buy an extended warranty and they said it was covered for any reason and any damage. The warranty company me that was not true and the brochure explained that. Funny thing is that Dicks never gave me the brochure so they told me to call Dicks directly.

I think the gator run in the stream was more invigorating. Certainly made me move with more urgency.

I know the feeling. I think we will have many more visits in the future.
