Tricky Math Question

Maybe I'm just stupid but this stumps me. Don't cheat and you will see what I mean.
 
Note: This must be done in your head only. Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator. Try it.
 
 
 
Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000. Now add 30. Add another 1000. Now add 20. Now add another 1000 Now add 10. What is the total?

Edited to add: that's what my calculator says too.  :confused:  I know I went to law school to avoid math because I am so poor at it, but I'm not getting this one...

ok...when you add in your head it is 5000. I will even ask Kevin, but calculator says

Wellll!!!  What happened to me was....I DIDN'T CHEAT..... I added the figures as I read the instructions. I didn't go back and recheck. I transposed the 30 to 300, the 20 to 200 etc.     DUH!!!

When I went back over it, I found that there were only 4 - 1000s and the other figures were in the tens and not hundreds. Presto.............I felt dumb. :p

I know Lori !!  It has me so confused now I don't know whether to scratch my watch or wind my butt.  You get the point of it.   If you add all the 1000's first (Lori) you will get the right answer.  If you read it normal you don't.
