Dr. Don

I just purchased a 2001 Viking 1706 popup camper and would like to add an air conditioner, furnace and refrigerator.  I noticed that the Viking has no roof vent opening. How do you install an add on A/C.  Also where can I find compatible appliances for this camper?  Thanks, Dr. Don :)

Dr Don,

I would think that for the A/C, you would need to find out first if your roof would support it. I know I have read where other's have added a support beam inside the roof panel to take on the extra weight issue of the A/C unit. Some others have also stated the support beam was there in place. Maybe someone who owns a pup like yours could give you some better insight about it. Or you could contact Viking and ask a tech, and also ask Viking about a furnace install information. Maybe they could send you out all the info needed.

As for the fridge, many options available. Some go with three-way, others go with dorm type, and others go with thermo-electric.

Dr. Don,

Call Viking and ask to speak to a technican, they can look up the measurements of your roof and where to locate your A/C unit. I am not sure what years but some also needed additional A/C braces, but they would have all of that information for you. Give them a call, they have always been very helpful for us. I called back in 2003 to get the measurements on how to install our A/C unit. Hope this helps.

Welcome to PUT.  Contacting the manufacture is the best way to get he correct information.  If you are handy you and a helper can install the AC yourself, but you have to cut a hole in the roof, so take your time.  As far as finding compatible appliances, they will work if they will fit in the box of your camper.  Are you planning on doing the work yourself or having a dealer do it?  If the dealer is going to do it, they will want to see you the appliance along with installing it.  Atwood, Norcold and Suburban are 3 of the common appliance manufacturers for refrigerators, water heaters and furnaces.  I would recommend a Carrier Air V with the heat option for you AC unit.  Good luck.:)
