Hi everyone.  we wanted to make a quick recommendation for Indiana Dunes SP located in Chesterton, IN.  It has nice facilities (I think the campground was redone about 3 yrs ago).  You can walk to the beach (about 15 min walk) and it is located near the South Shore Line train in case you want to make a trip into Chicago.  We have been twice this summer.  The only downside is that you need to make reservations as it seems to be booked each weekend during the summer months.

We stayed at the campground there earlier this summer and I quite agree with you. The wife wasn't sure about it because it didn't have hook-ups, but the beauty and layout of the sites won her over. We planned on only staying a night or two but wound up staying longer. I'd reccomend it to anyone wanting to get away from it all.

You guys are talking about two different campgrounds.  The Indiana Dunes SP campground was recently redone.  Has paved pads and elctric hook ups.  I have heard very good things about since the renovation, but have not personally stayed there.
The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Park also has a campground.  This is a beautiful rustic campground with the cadillac of all campground Bathouses.  We actually stayed there a couple of years ago while the SP was being remodeled.  When I go back that way it will be a tough choice as to which campground I will stay at, but it will probably be the National campground.  The lack of electric hook ups tend to ekkp things quieter.

Still, the lakeshore is beautiful and we plan to return in the future.

Hey, that is an easy mistake to make.  Even folks that live around here do not realize that there are two parks right there together.

We meant to go check out the state park while we were there but we got distracted by swimming in the lake, the zoo in Michigan City, and several other other attractions that were available. The only thing that wasn't fun was having to change the spark plugs in the K-Mart parking lot while the DW and kids did the laundry  :yikes: .

Hi Folks, I would like to add to the recommendation on the Indiana Dunes State Park.  My wife and I stayed there over the Labor Day weekend and attended the Chicago Jazz Festival.  I have to admit that I really didn't like the line up at the festival, but I really enjoyed the park.... walking along the lake as well as some of the forest trails.  There is a nature center for those that want to learn more about the sand dunes.  The facilities are great and so are the staff.  We did have a family beside us that left their poodles in a tent, but it didn't take too long for four park attendants to enter the tent and retrieve the barking poodles.
