Well, we finally found a used pop up. It is a Coachman. It has the scissor type hinges rather than a crank system. A bit of a pain to set up but, I am sure it will get easier as we do it more. It needs a bit of work. Mostly just a good cleaning and, a new jack. We got it on the cheap though. We are totally new to this. We got it cheap enough that if we decide camping is not our thing, we should be able to get back what we have into it if we decided to sell.
Sorry to ramble, but I am a little excited here. I also wanted to thank everyone that has responded to the questions I have posted so far.

Thank you. We have come to realize that we will most likely not make it out this year.  With school starting and, my oldest sons (12) hockey about to be in full swing, there just won't be the time. Once we get her all cleaned up, we will be doing some backyard camping. Not quite the same but, the kids will still enjoy it a little. My youngest son (5) just got a kick outta having lunch in it today. Seems our puppy is pretty fond of it as well. He hopped right in, got up on one of the beds and, fell right asleep(LOL).

Congratulations on the new PU!  Good luck with fixing it and enjoy camping in it, even BYC (back yard camping).:)

Don't give up completely on getting out this year.
When our kids were little DS had soccer every weekend and DD had dance on Saturday mornings.
We did many quick overnight trips to cgs close by.
Just through a change of clothes in the TV and get groceries on the way.
It is a great get away and wonderful time.
Congrats and enjoy!

Our first PU was a 1972 Viking (we bought it in 1999).  We'd toyed with getting something like PU because sleeping onthe hard ground was killing DH's back.  He spotted this one for sale near his mom's house and paid the guy $200 for it.  He surprised me and brought it home while I was gone.  He had bought it on a Friday with the understanding he'd tow it home the next week after getting a tow hitch.  Well, that Saturday I injured my arm and ended up casted.  We have camping reservations the following weekend.  Not a good thing!  Ours was the same kind of lift and heavy, and my son was only 9 and a little too short to lift it all the way up.  We went anyway and we managed.  With my good arm and my son on one side and my DH on the other, we got it set up.  But then we had more duct tape on the tenting than canvas!  We used it for a season, decided we liked it, and started the hunt for a newer one.  Last I heard, the family we passed it on to had upgraded and passed it on to another family.  If the termites are still holding hands, the trailer likely is still being used by someone!!

As you said the backyard is a great place to camp for the first time and or the driveway helps get all the bugs out before the real thing.........As stated before there still is some time left maybe your son will have a bye(no game) and everyone can go somewhere that weekend.......Welcome and Happy Camping.......If nothing else it'll give you time to get it all cleaned up and ready for next camping season........good luck with camping and hockey!

Thank you so much for the positive replies. Well, she was used for the first time last night. My oldest son and, nephew camped in the backyard. They really had a good time. We have been tossing aroung differnt ideas to peronalize our trailer. I have already started removing the factory stripes and, lettering. They are all cracked and, peeling. I have one side just about done. It looks alot cleaner. I might even give it a quick paint job come spring. I do a little airbrushing and, would like to find a fiberglass cover for the spare so, I can paint a skull on it. My wife and, I may try to make new curtains this winter. We want to use some kind of funny print. I have also decided to ad "dingle balls" like you see in low riders. We just really wanna try and, have fun with it.

How about posting some pics.  I have a '75 PUP with spring assisted arms that fold inside the box when you let it down.  I've never seen one with scissor type of lift.  I'm glad ours don't have a crank system as they seem prone to trouble with age or misuse/abuse.  We've camped in ours in our yard more than anything LOL!

Sorry, no way to post pics. If this helps here is what I can tell ya about it. It is an 85 Coachman c1600 made by Viking. I tried to do a search so that I could ad a link that showed pictures but, no luck.
