I recently drained the fresh water tank in my Rockwood 2280 pop up by turning on the faucet and running the water until nothing but air was coming out. We usually camp at sites that provide direct ("City") water and have never used the pump before but did notice an odor from the water coming out from the faucet. I thought a check valve in the system was surposed to prevent the filling of the internal storage tank? Anyway, the pump ran when the faucet was open and didn't stop after the tank appeared empty; I had to throw the electrical converter switch to off to stop the pump. I fear I might now have a problem next time camping if the pump start up and doesn't turn off. did i do something wrong?

I would look for a pump shut off switch in your camper.  Since you had water in your tank and didn't know it was there, I am guessing it was pretty nasty and that is what you were smelling.  I would sanitize the water system before using it again.:)
