At which point do you have your wheel bearings service  X # miles or X months/years?  Is this difficult to do?

While we don't have large about of miles on these tires.  They are 5 years old
in the Sun.  Is it wise to have them replaced?

A little bit of both. The Dexter Axle systems, which is on my Starcraft, recommends wheel bearing service be done on an annual bases or every 12,000 miles. Since I've been putting some considerable miles every year on the PU (9,000 to 10,000, with the exception of one year), wheel bearing service and replacement of the 12" tires has been an annual event. Last year I replaced the wheel bearings, which means they were in service close to 50,000 miles.

I have a couple of friends who also have popup campers but they only use and travel short distances every year, so they have opted to do the bearing service every other season. Their choices and it seems to work for them, but I like knowing that my Starcraft is ready to roll, even for long distances if need be.

One of the most important aspects of pulling a popup is the ease at which your tires/wheels must work! This is also one of the most overlooked aspects of trailer maint....

I have my bearings repacked annually, and it cost me $17.00 per axle at the local tire shop where I live...well worth the money when it comes to servicability and safety!

I agree with the replacement mileage, but I just leave that to the servicemen when they are repacking the bearings! If they tell me they are good to go, okay...if they say the bearings are a little loose, hey, replace them, lol!

We repacked just before leaving on our last major trip (2,500 miles) and the trailer pulled so easy, it felt like the trailer didn't even make the trip, lol!

Gives you a peace of mind also to know you do not have to worry able the axles overheating after a new pack job!

Money well spent that is well worth the results!

Pack it and head out! Happy camping!
