Cobalt,
I remembered our camping buddies stayed near Aspen this past July.
Difficult Campground & Grp Sites
Aspen Ranger District
Aspen CO 81611
See ReserveAmerica for specifics.

They seemed to enjoy it and were impressed by the scenery.
I've never been there myself, but we have similar tastes in CGs.
Their comments:

"It is a beautiful area and yes we would stay there again. There is NO
electric or water hook ups. Each spot is relatively secluded with lots of
trees. There is also a very nice river which I know you would like!"

Here's a link to the forest service website with campgrounds near Aspen:

Aspen-area campgrounds fill up very quickly, so you have to make reservations early.  Some are tent camping only, so make sure they allow campers.

How close to Aspen do you want to be?  There are lots of campgrounds near Aspen that aren't nearly as crowded, such as Ruedi Reservoir area or Redstone/McClure Pass area.  We've also camped at Independence Pass outside of Aspen, which is beautiful but near the road and very small.

Try Chapman, east of Reudi.  I have a friend who lives in Gypsum that says that is a nice spot.

Looking at the "100 Best", (which I just received and so far I can't say I agree with wholeheartedly) they also list Mollie B, near Reudi; Silver Bar, Silver Belle and Silver Queen, southwest of Aspen; or Redstone and Bogan Flats, south of Carbondale on 133.

Camping near Aspen almost seems like an oxymoron, but seems there are a number of campgrounds there.
