I am thinking of taking my son flyfishing in April. Has anyone stayed at Mountain creek campground in Gardners, PA? I'm looking for a campground with sites right on the river (not necessarily THAT river, I'll try any river in that area). I would also consider state parks as I am fully equipped to dry camp. Any suggestions would be extremely helpful and much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Poe Paddy SP in center county has great fly fishing.  They have some electric sites.  You check in at the ranger station at Poe Valley SP, which you have to pass to get to Poe Paddy.  You are out in the middle of the woods at both parks.:)

I just checked out the websites for both parks and they look real nice, I'll definately keep them in mind ( I still have 2 months to make up my mind!) Thanks for the Info.:)

The guy who owns the pet feed store in town also owns a campground.  Of course the brochure he gave said something about great fishing.  I don't have the brochure anymore.  (Darn kids!)  I will see him on Thursday and can let you know the name of the place.

I liked the wood floor. Is it pergo or real?

You are welcome.  DH and DS fish in the lake at Poe Valley on a regular basis.  Another SP campground you might consider is RB Winter SP.  They have a lake for trout fishing and fishing in Rapid Run to fish in.  DH said to tell you that Penns Creek has the green drake hatch in early August, and that Elk Creek and Pine Creek (there are more than one creek with the same name) are class A trout streams with native brook trout.  They are near the town of Coburn and Millheim.  Big Poe creek is stocked below the dam at Poe Valley SP heading toward Poe Paddy sp.  DH fished wet flies at Poe Valley last year, but he uses spinning gear.:)

Great! Now that's exactly what I was looking for. I think I'll Make my plans soon. I've never reserved a site in a SP in PA before. Do they fill up quick? I'm probably shooting for mid April. Again, Thanks !

April 13th is the opening weekend for most of the SP CGs in PA and I am guessing the opening weekend for trout season.  I just checked and Poe Paddy is almost completely booked for the opening weekend.  The next weekend April 20th weekend there are a lot of openings. Poe Valley is going to have major renovations done to it this year.  They are not taking reservations for the campground because of this.  They should have more information at the end of February.  The campground will be open at times, but on a first come first serve basis.  This will cause Poe Paddy to fill up quicker than normal.

Here is the link for the SP online reservations.

i tented at mtn crk in Gardners when i was a teen and did a driveby just back in sept. when we were on our 2nd pu trip staying at caledonia sp up the road.  the creek is really that ... a creek... through the cg and since i'm not a real fisherlady, i don't know about that angle ;)  But most sites on the creek look like seasonals.  after visiting, we decided if we come back to the area we'l stay at caledonia again or ry pine grove sp.  very nice, quiet, pretty parks.
