Hi Everyone!
Okay, hubby and I want to travel around the Adirondack area in New York. A co-worker of his recommended the Lake George area to camp as a base and drive around. Has anyone been to Lake George Escape Campground or Adirondack Camping Village? Are there any other campgrounds you'd recommend? Sure would appreciate any hints or advice you can give. Thanks.

We stayed at Rogers Rock CG last year. Had a great time. It's on the NW corner of the lake. About 20-30 minutes from town of Lake George (away from crowds) and about 15-20 minutes from Fort Ticondaroga. Plenty to see in area, kids had a great time too.

Lake George is normally crowded as heck during the summer. There are a couple of water parks and The Great Escape in the area (which is in serious need of renovation). The lake is not conducive to paddle sports because it is busy, choppy and crowded. The touristy stuff is-well-touristy. If that's what you're looking for, then LG is your place. If you like motorcycles, the Americade is a large rally held in June. It's extremely noisey and crowded for that week, so be aware.

There are 4 NYS campgrounds around Lake George. These include Hearthstone, Battle Ground, and Roger's Rock. There are no hookups, so it's dry camping (NYS cg's in the Adirondacks have no hook ups). Hearthstone is filthy, large and noisey pretty much through the camping season. Roger's Rock is probably the nicest of the 4 NYS campgrounds around the lake because it is more toward Ticonderoga.

Last summer the area suffered a large fire on it's main street, taking out several stores and shops and a tragic tour boat accident where 20 people died. This did not affect the larger tour boat company that runs the really big boat tours around the lake.

There are several private, full hook-up campgrounds at one end of Lake George. We haven't stayed in any of them but travel passed them routinely. Normally we see larger rigs there. It's hard to tell how large the actual camping sites are.

Schroon Lake, Saranac Lake, and other areas are nicer if you really want to get an idea of what the Adirondacks are really like. If you are more into the amusement parks and tourist attractions, then Lake George would be the spot.

For the past six years we include Lake George as part of our annual ventures.  The Schroon Valley Resort (http://www.lakegeorgecamping.com) is our personal favorite.  It's not over crowded, the tent and pop up sites are nice, and there is plenty to do.  It's about a 15-20 minute ride to downtown Lake George Village.

The campground itself is on the Schroon River which has some nice fishing and great tubing.  The campground rents tubes and will drop you off about a mile or so upstream for a nice casual tube ride back to the campground.  There are activites during the week and most weekends there is some type of event taking place.

My sister who basically lives in the Jersey Shore (my sister and brother-in-law have a seasonal campsite their for their massive fifth wheel down in Jersey) now joins us each year along with my other sister who lives locally up at Ticonderoga, NY.

I'm sure the other campgrounds like Lake George RV Park are nice but Schroon Valley has become a family tradition and we all really like the campground and their owner Dave and his wife are really nice folks willing to go out of the way to make your stay pleasant.

We stayed there in September 05.  It was Ok, but I drove thru Lake George RV park during our stay and was more impressed with that.  I believe they are priced comporably, but the facilities, roads, and sites are much nicer at Lake George RV Park.  You better book early.

We stayed there this summer and had a blast...the kids never went in the pool...they spent the whole week playing/swimming in the river!!!  we had a awesome site right on the river and we could sit there by the campfire and watch the kids playing in the river.  Hubby even caught a 18-20 inch pike and I won $17 in quarters at bingo....

This was our first year camping in Lake George. We stayed at the Lake George RV Park and loved it. The staff was friendly and helpful. We heard it was a bit pricey compared to others but haven't had the chance to scout out others. Lake George RV Park is on our list for a redo next year.

Wife, daughter(12) have spent time at Lake George Escape. We rented units twice and this year will take our new PUP there for memorial day.  Many activites at the park and we found it to be very clean.  They have a shuttle that will take you into the village so you don't have to worry about parking...we would recommend it to you.   Two weeks and we are there!!!!!

Wow, $38/night for lakeside site at Lake George Schroon Valley Resort! Must be hook-ups are a necessity for anyone who pays that price to camp in the Adirondacks. I live right in the middle of the Adirondacks and camp at state campgrounds 3-4 different times throughout the season and probably for about 3 weeks accumulatively. The sites we have reserved for this year are right on the lake. I also don't need a game room, bingo, pool hall, etc when camping. I prefer camping and enjoying what the Adirondacks has to offer - hiking, lake swimming, kayaking, fishing, sitting by the fire, etc.

Although the state sites don't have hook-ups they offer pretty good privacy and many are near lakes. Being a native of the Adirondacks I prefer the state sites compared to many private campgrounds who cram in campers. But each to their own. If you want to check out state campgrounds go to //www.reserveamerica.com and search for sites in New York.

Dave had sold the Schroon Valley Resort and Campground this past February.  The new owners also own the Great Escape Campground. Price have increased and it looks like alot of the Season campers have moved else where.

I'm hoping the new owner continues to improve on the campground, we've always enjoyed staying there (camped there since 2002).  There is also talk about adding a user fee to those staying there in addition to the nightly rates.  The Lake George Great Escape owners also own a campground over at Cape Cod so I'm curious on whether or not they plan to make this a membership campground, especially considering the user fee.  Will have to wait and see this August.
