Hey Everyone in the camping world!

Has anyone ever stayed at the Waterloo Recreation Park in Michigan? What are your thoughts on it..would you go again? We love Van Ripper in the U.P, Interlochen, and Young State Parks but would like to try something different. Any hints would be helpful. Doesn't need to be a State Park...we just like their prices. ;-)

I stayed at the Portage Lk campground there. It's kind of shaded but open between sites, and the sites are not very big compared to some of the parks. If it were full swing of the season I doubt I'd of liked it. But it was a cool November, no..make that a cold Nov weekend and not many were there except us crazy ladies on our womens weekend and a few hunters.

Never got the chance to drive thru the Sugarloaf CG or the Rustic part.

Doubtful we'd go back unless it were off season. The park itself  is huge. Lots to explore, no shortage of hiking or boating. We like a little more seperation between sites..the campground kind of reminded me of Metamora SP.

We've stayed at both Sugar Loaf and Portage Lake.  It's only a 20 minute drive there from home, so we use it as a quick get away on weekends when we may still have commitments at home.

Sugar Loaf is very open.  The north loop is definately the place to be, up away from most of the crazyness.  We are quiet campers.  It was wonderfully quiet during the week, but on Friday night, the atmosphere changed to a big party.

Portage Lake Campground has more trees, and is a little hilly.  There are some nice spots to be had there.  The beach is also nice, and there is a camp store.  There are alcohol restrictions most of the year.  It was MUCH quieter here than at Sugar Loaf.  We camped at both last October, and prefer Portage Lake.  :)

The bath/shower buildings at both are standard Michigan DNR design, and reasonably clean.

Not bad at all for a quickie camping adventure close to home!
