Hello,

Has anyone camped in the Niagara Falls area??  We are considering a trip there this summer and would appreciate any feedback from any who have been there.  We generally camp near ocean areas but want to try something different.

Are you interested in US side or Canadian?  SP or private campground?  There are several choices.  We've stayed at Four Mile Creek SP ourselves and found it to be very nice.  One advantage of staying in one of the SPs is free parking (normally $10) at Niagara Falls State Park, which gives you access to the falls.  It's an easy walk to the Canadian side via the Rainbow Bridge from there.

We also stayed at Four Mile Creek State Park and really liked it. The sites are grassy and the sunsets are wonderful. It wasn't a long ride into town and we parked on the US side of the bridge for free, walked over and spent the day on the Canadian side.

Another you might check is Riverside Campground. It is on the Canadian side right across the street from the river not that far from all the tourist stuff. It's been a couple of years since we were there. But I think I've seen other posts about the campground on this forum. If you stay on the Canadian side you get a good exchage rate on your credit card on the cost of the site. Good Luck.

Four mile creek SP is probably your best bet for a SP in the area, there is beach access but no swimming, excellent place for a sunset.  If you like Geocaching this park has a great one, I think it is called Razor's Edge.  There are some short hiking trails in the park too.  There are some private CG's like KOA and the sort but the SP is what I would pick.  I live about 20 min from Niag Falls and actually work in the city.

Depends on what you like to do but the SP is in Youngstown, NY...grew up there.  There is another SP there called Fort Niagara (no camping here) still great sunsets.  It is an old French fort which is right across the Niagara river from the Canadian Fort George.  A neat place to visit.  Fort Niagara SP has a swimming pool and beach access some play areas and is a good place for a picnic and it is about 3-5 minutes from Four Mile Creek SP.  Depending on your time of visit there are re-enactments at the Fort which may be going on.  I went to one last year with the family and it was pretty cool, it was of the French and Indian War.

If you like to widow shop and bike ride or like a nice restaurant go across the Niagara River to Niagara-on-the Lake.  It is the town that the Canadian Fort is in.  Youngstown is hoping to get a ferry that will go across the river to Canada, the ferry may be in place this summer.  It is a neat town and has a lot to offer as far as shopping and just strolling around, oh and Jet boat tours of the Niagara Rapids.

I want to tell you I am a tried and true American (born in the heart land Indiana) but your best view of the Falls will be from the Candadian side.  The US side is nice too but the Canadian view is much better.  NF Canada is light years ahead of NF NY.  You can still go on the Maid of the Mist boat ride at the falls and the cave of the winds tunnel tour is on the US side too.

Ok back to the US, Lewiston NY is also a nice town for going out to dinner and is about 7-8 miles from Four Mile Creek SP.  There are also some historical sites here too.  If I can help you with any more info let me know.  Good luck planning your trip.

We did this trip about 8 years ago.  We stayed at Chippewa Creek Conservation Area in Wellandport, ON.

It's was a nice clean campground when we were there.  We used it as a base of operations more than anything else, and did day trips to the falls, St. Catherines (where you can see ships going through locks in the Welland Canal), Toronto (Hockey Hall of Fame), and my pilgrimmage to the hometown of Wayne Gretzky, Brantford, where we stumbled upon the home of Alexander Graham Bell.  It was a great trip.

Enjoy yours!

You've probably already made your trip plans (or even taken your trip), but we just returned from camping at Four Mile Creek S.P. and would definitely echo the positive comments put forth so far. We had a beautiful, grassy, very spacious site right on the lake, with a weeping willow tree for shade. Bathroom facilities are nothing special but fine. Small playscape for children. Other campers were friendly and courteous. Nature programs were just starting up when we left. And the free parking at Niagara Falls S.P. is a great bonus.

If you have extra time, take a stroll through downtown Lewiston, which is between Niagara Falls and the campground. Little shops, restaurants, gazebos, flowers and fountains everywhere. Just lovely. Don't eat at the falls - stop at the bake shop in Lewiston and you won't be sorry!
