I am in the prosess of doing a total rebuild on my 1992 Rockwood XL pop up hard sides So far i have gutted the inside due to water damage. the floor corners under the lift drive system is rotted the past owners put plywood on top of rot (only under the lift system) and remounted lift to that my question is what is the best way to repair (meaning how to splice the new wood to the old wood) do i cut out rot and glue and screw stringers (4 in treated wood 2in on old wood 2 in on new wood )
under side of floor ? the rot is about 1ftX2ft so its under my counters and storage areas ? 2 sides will be resting on outer frame corners.

I have been lurking here for awile and have read about the last 70 pages in Mr fix it in the last 3 days and I have gotten some good info here enough to attempt this. I do have exp making cabinets and have built 1 of my homes (myself and contractors) so I know I can do the whole project. We are taking pic. of everything we do. That will help putting everything back together. I wont be changing any of the layout. I will be starting the new  cabinets in the morning. Still trying to think of what to use for counter tops (least $$$)
Thank you for all the help reading hes really informed me alot

I think that some people may be tempted to "Over-build" on a project like this. I know that I would.

The thing that you must keep in mind is weight. The frame and axle is designed to handle a limited amount of weight. The more weight that one ads, during rebuilding, takes away from what gear that you can carry in the camper.

Formica on light weight plywood should make good counter-tops.

I was thinking about that. I was able to pull the cabnits out without pulling them apart at least mostly together and put the in the shed
to dry out and they are heavy. i know i can build a lighter cabnit. I
have noticed the one of the members built a new stove and used (forgot what it is called ) starts with a M i had planed on edging it then clear coating the entire piece before i mounted it. well off to harborfraight to get a brad nailer and get started on this project i have been trying to upload pics but trere too big.

Hello, I believe you are talking about Melamine. It is particleboard with a very thin formica on both sides. The only disadvantage I can think of is this: because the formica is so thin, a good scratch can expose the particleboard to moisture, and as you know particleboard puffs up like a sponge when it gets wet. I made some shelves for my shed with this stuff and thats what happened ( the shed had a leak). Just be sure to seal the edges real good . Hope this helped.

Well its been raining so i havent been able to pull the roof. The good and bad about this pup is it has hard sides. so i have to remove the roof droop the posts and lift the hard sides with the rail its attached to off the side wall. ( 1 of my lifter posts is broke and need to install a new 1 only way to get it out ) so there is some rot in the floor and back wall .Hence the total rebuild . that wasent planed on my new to me pup. well its been raining and i pulled out all the inside to be able the repair the floor and lift. (1 thing leads to another )So im steamrolling with things to do . I go out to the camper while its raining. Really dont want to do it. Campies Track record sucks. (kids have named it now so I have to fix it) and the roof is leaking. Door side rear ,Small drip from a/c. So i go poking around with a ice pick to see how soft things are and see that the front side is rot all the way across. Dont see this to be too hard to fix .The new question is behind the a/c the roof is sagging.I think when the roof fell because the lift system snaped ( this happend the 2nd time i carnked it up after i got her home )roof came down all except 1 corner from all the way lifted. i think i snaped a cross member . i have no idea whats in the roof. I read that a member had the same camper as i Rockwood XL
and had to rebuild his roof and wondered if anyone has been in a rockwood roof ? the roof is flat inside but rises to the center outside about 3in rise from front to center and rear to center . inside is metal outside looks like fiberglass.
I had a chance to up load some pics look in my sig if anyone has any input i would love the help. i will take pics of the roof and upload in a few days

Well I have gotten a good start on the pup. We got the roof off tonight and took off the had sides. all the parts i need have been delivered.
All thats left is a trip to lowes for some wood and odds and ends. I have to rebuild the roof from the ac back and the front and door side. Also the floor under the lift mounts thinking about taking a 1ft strip from side to side insted of just patching the corners. the roof is really got me thinking what do i use for joists. it looks like 1x2 was used and just diddnt hold up well. should i use the 1x2 ? and waht type off wood will work best ? i was also thinking i coud get a 7ft 1x1 L and rap it to the top of the rafter to give the roof added support?

PatB

If you use 1x2's then I've found it better to rip my own from 2x4's so that they are nice and straight. It's just getting too difficult to find 1x2's that aren't already warped at the lumber store.

I just finished off the roof. And yes i did end up ripping all the wood from 2x4s and 2x6s .I did not have to rebuild the whole roof. I repaired all 4 side rails and 3 of the inner pieces (the wood the side rails screw to) all and all it was not as hard off a job as i thought. But i cheated . i used a u shaped piece of steal ( stuff they use to hang a/c units ) as a joist To take the sag out off the center of the roof.I talked to Mike over at forest river and he recomended not to tear the whole roof apart. also the joist will give it a lot more strenght for the a/c unit.
I also had to take the back off the pup off and build a new one .and about 1ft off the floor from wall to wall. i have taken some pics of the progress so far. in the pics they are the before. as i was tearing apart ( what the person i bought it from said was just repaired). as you can see he used a sighn to patch .all was hidden with the skin off the camper. i have the rear all back together but it was too dark to take anymore pics and i allready tarped it for the night i will take more pics in the morning. i only have 2 service calls so i can get back to putting back together after lunch. Allmost forgot i replaced 1 off the lift springs. ( The reason i started to take the camper apart in the first place)

.I feel today was a productive day.
