Just got back from a weekend at Myles Standish State Park. It was great. Hiking, biking, fishing, and camping amongst the giant pine trees. We had site 01 at the Barretts Pond area and it was one of the best sites there (125ft x 75ft; no other sites next to it on any side). The evenings were very quiet and I would highly recommend this forest to anyone looking for the "true camping experience" (no hook-ups or hot water showers). I have four kids between 7 and 1 yrs. old and we had a blast. You can reserve your sites on line. My recommendation would be get site 1 if you can, if not 12-16,20,23.

Are you sure you were not at Myles Standish State Forest?  [see important note below.] I was unable to find anything called "Myles Standish State Park" on the Mass. Dept. of Conservation web site, but M.S.S.F. and M.S. Monument State Reservation (no camping) were listed.

Barrets Pond Camping Area is in Myles Standish State Forest (a minor distinction in this case).

If you are into stargazing or astronomy, areas of MSSF have some of the darkest skies in southeastern New England.

Myles Standish was an ancestor of mine; I am not sure off the top of my head if I am descended from him directly or from a stepchild.

Important Note: There is a link on the MSSF page referenced above that is labeled "Charge Pond" and is supposed to show a map of the MSSF Charge Pond campng area.  This link is broken and actually shows an image of a camping area at Mount Greylock State Reservation, over 100 miles from MSSF.

So, AB, did you come with one of those cool helmets?

Careful there; we could be related! ;)

Myles Standish State Park  - Myles Standish State Forest .... At least I got the first 3 words right, for a 75% score which was about my average.  Everything else in the post is accurate (I think).

Wouldn't think so, never had anyone quite so interesting in my lineage that I'm aware of as Myles Standish.  But then, I've heard that mathematicaly speaking, the furthest anyone would be from anyone else on the planet is 8th cousin.  Now there's a thought to mull over!  But that should be a new thread.

The closest I've been able to tie PJay and I is 10th cousins.  The 8th cousin thing makes some huge assumptions that are not correct.  For example, peoples indigenous to Easter Island would probably not be closer than 20th cousin to anyone not on Easter Island, simply because it has been that long since the island became genetically isolated.

Generally, the "8th cousin" thing  requires more-or-less univeral mixing of at least one generation (or equivalent) at some point in the last 360 years.  That has not happened.

Well, I certainly can't dispute any of this.  I don't remember where I read it, and my recollection may be off as well.  I think the concept that we all may be related is the most interesting facet.  Puts a new twist on dealing with others.

Thanks so much for the information.  I've got it book marked for another time!

Hello, Glad you liked Myles Standish. I've been going there since I was a teenager and now bring my teeanagers. My favorite  area to stay is Curlew Pond site 29. but I book it 6 months in advance so I can stay right on the water!  There are many of us that live locally who camp and go to work from there we love it so much.  I would like to tell you though, that there should have been hot showers for you.  They are available at most of the of the camping areas so you might want to let the Rangers know that yours weren't working! This will be my first summer in years that I won't be going to Curlew- the kids are too busy!!! Going to try Hammonasset, in CT instead but will try to sneak in a a weekend in Carver in the fall.
Happy camping to you! Thanks for the post-you brought back some good memories!
