Only for a second or two. The pilot light heats a thermocouple. The thermocouple is what controls the flow of gas. When the pilot light goes out, the thermocouple cools quickly and shuts off the gas.

The reason that you have to hold down that button for 30 seconds after you light the pilot is to heat the thermocouple enough to allow it to turn on the gas flow automatically. :sombraro: .

Useful to know Wavery, thanks.

How about the darn pilot for the fridge.  Does anyone else have trouble with theirs?  It's very hard for me to see if it's on or not.  And at the beach last time had to keep relighting.  Some have said they drive with this on.  I have a hard time thinking that if I did my pilot would stay lit...

Technically that's not the pilot on your fridge; that's the burner itself. It needs to stay lit the whole time you are running the fridge on propane or the fridge stops cooling. It certainly can be temperamental, but it sounds like yours is a little more temperamental than some. Maybe there was a strong wind from just the wrong direction? I've driven with my fridge lit on many occasions and it never went out when I didn't want it to.

Not a pilot light.  Really?  The wind WAS strong on that side of the PU.

I have another related question.  Does anyone have some suggestions about how to use the hot water heater for the shower?  For example, do you light the pilot light in the morning and then shut it off after a couple hours and then use the remaining hot water for the rest of the day?  Or do you just light it before your shower?  Thanks for any help.

You can do what you posted.  Most people light it and leave it on.  It doesn't use much propane when just the pilot light is lit.  The burner fires on and off as needed.:)

I light it and leave it on until we get ready to leave.

I light my water heater when we first setup the PopUp, (after connecting to the city water, or filling the 20 gallon holding tank and making sure that there is water in the water heater tank).  And it dosn't get turned off until I disconnect the city water, or the roof has been lowered and we're ready to roll out of camp.

I agree that the pilot don't use much at all, we leave our pilots light at our cabin all year long except water heater over winter as we drain all water.
Thanks for the replys on this I was just wondering if I was losing any when it blew out.
