I have only been to Assateague Island NS. We camp on the ocean side about 200-300 from the high tide mark, just over the sand dune. We can hear the pounding surf all night long and it lulls us to sleep.
Our first time there was on the way home from the 2002 PUT rally in Townsend, TN. We spent several nights there and moved on to Frontier Town CG where we hooked up with Campnfan and his family (again from the rally) for a few more nights.

We stopped there again in 2004 for a two night stay on our way to Disney. Then for a week in 2006 and we are going again the end of June this year. We have decided it will be the place we try to return to every year.

Assateague has wild ponies that roam the island. They are wild like any other wild animal and we find it comical to see a people leave a cooler unattended outside of their camper or tent. The ponies will use their hoofs to knock the cooler over and open it. Once the food spills out, they have a feast. We have only caught them in the feasting stage but can figure out their way into the coolers. I did get to see one hoofing an open flap on a tent. The ponies will travel in a herd and go from site to site like any other wild animal looking for food.

I did get a chance to pat one on the beach once. Not a smart thing to do because they will stomp and/or bite you if they feel threatened. I was sitting in a beach chair and let them approach me. I held my ground and sat quietly until one was close enough to pat. The pony moved on after a couple of pats and I stayed put.

The worst thing about Assateague is the mosquitoes. The first time there I thought I was going to bleed to death from all of the bites before I found my insect repellent. We now pick a site with little brush, on the oceanside where we have a breeze, bring plenty of DEET and a screen room.

Semper Paratus.......Always Ready
Is the motto of the Coast Guard and that is the key to having a good time at Assateague. I can't count the number of people that book a week and leave after two days due to the mosquitoes.

Having solar panels and two batteries helps too.

Portable toilets
Weird showers that are like a bathroom stall, you are outside in a booth and people can see your legs and head if you are tall enough, while you are showering
Shower water unheated except for ground heat. Cold only but it works for people from Maine.........they have warm groundwater compared to here in Maine.

No camp store, playroom, pool or anything else a commercial Cg has but my DD has never complained she is bored at this CG like she does at the ones with all of the amenities. It is incredible how busy you can get when you are crabbing, fishing, swimming in the ocean, sunbathing or flying kites.

We have been to Cape Code, Cape Hatteras, and Cumberland Island.
Cumberland Island is our favorite.

I have been to Cape Hatteras, Cape Lookout, Cape Canaveral and Point Reyes. I love N.C., and will return often to both of these parks, but Point Reyes is absolutely gorgeous! My DW and I have never been to the west coast together, but I hope to take her someday.
