New PU owner (Palomino) and need to lug 4 bikes with us.  Any suggestions?  We tow with a Jeep Grand Cherokee.  Any insight would be great.

Thanks

We are new pop-up owners (2006 Palomino) and have a couple of nice outings set for the summer. However, we will not be able to take both vehicles with us.

I can not vouch for this bike rack from experience but it does look like it would do the trick for you.

i have seen several solutions.  1 is home-made (PVC) or pre-made (metal) rack that fits on the pup.  Another is a kind that either bolts on the pup frame in front, near the tongue, which can be hand made or store bought, as well.  Also, option exists to mount on the tongue with a speacial adapter, too.

Thule makes a 4 place bike rack that slides into a 2" hitch. Back end of rack will take a ball. It tows great, I have a 89 Dodge Dakota, & a small PU trailer. I did have lots of sway, this hitch moved trailer about 2 feet further off my hitch, sway disapeared.

I own both a Thule bike rack as well as a Yakima and they're nearly identical in quality. Both are top of the line but can be expensive. One thought is that with both of these companies you are basically buying a system that can be reconfigured in the future by buying some new accessories. You might not need that sort of flexibility, but it's there.

I disagree..... Thule has been nothing but troubles in my family!! Yakima has always worked!

[We purchased a Swagman 4 bike carrier that also has  a hitch mounted to it.We used it for the first time this past weekend and it worked great. The model is 64675.You can see it at Swagman.com.We purchased ours at http://www.prolineracks.com/Swagman-64675-tow-bike-racks.html.

Well, my advice would be to shop around and follow the P-U manufacturers suggestions. I took lots of advice. Eventually ended up placing a hitch reciever on the rear of my pop-up and purchased a hitch style bike rack. Lots of money invested in all this and to no avail. I cannot use it because of the sway it generates when towing. I had asked questions on this forum, but I neglected to seek the manufacturer's advice. Afterwards they told me that the rear hitch and/or a rooftop style would not be good on m p-u. It is an ultra-light model therefore I cannot use either of these. I would have to stay with PRO RAC, the tongue mounted version or as mentioned above a hitch style rack with an extended ball. There is a lot of excellent advice on this forum, but each situation is particular. Again gather all info, combine it with your pop-up specs, budget and preferences. This tends to be a great equation for great camping experiences....

When we purchased our Coleman Bayside in about 2001 we had the Yakima system installed by the dealer.  We've since replaced ALL the trays with another company - Rocky Mount - I believe.  We actually have had the bolts sheer off of the Yakima and almost lost a very expensive bike.  It is also a pain to put more than 2 bikes up on top of the camper.  I would really like to change to the one in the PUT store - the Pro Rack Tongue mounted one.

That's my 2 cents for what it's worth.
