outdoor stove or regulator issue

We have a 2000 Coleman Niagara Elite.  The outdoor stove will light if it is hooked to the PUP but just a little.  If I hook up a small disposable propane cylinder it works great.  I am assuming my problem therfore must be with the PUP's regulator or line to the side for the stove.  I am wondering how I can check out the regulator or lines.  The regulator has always been covered by the ABS shield up front, it looks to be in great shape.  The indoor stove and furnace work just fine.

Thanks in advance Giff

Don't know about your where-abouts, but here in my lo cal, my L/P dealer (I also use propane at home, too, so I really know the people), has the equipment and will check out the regulator on the PU in short order.  What I have to do is give them a call and set a time when I'll show up with the camper in tow and they go right to work on it and never takes more than a couple of minutes.

You might try giving an propane dealer in your area a call and see if they will do this service. In my case, it cost nothing, but then, I'm a customer. In fact, my Starcraft owner's manuel suggests doing this very thing on a regular basis.

The outside propane connection on mine is low pressure for use with the trailers' stove. If you're using a camping stove, such as Coleman, you need to use a high pressure connection that bypasses the regulator. Then your stove will work fine.Moose

My 99 coleman Sun valley had the same problem with the outside stove. In the owner's manual it says the outside stove is high pressure only and runs about 15psi. It turned out the diaphragm was bad and I had to get a new regulator. My setup was a high pressure reg, then a tee( this line ran to the outside stove), then the low pressure reg(11 inches of water). After I replaced the regulator I had no more problems, but I would do as Fly says and have an LP dealer check out your system first. There could just be an obstruction in the line. No sense in buying a new reg if you don't have to.

Be aware that the regulator in this case is unusual. It is a two-stage regulator that provides low pressure for all your inside appliances and high pressure for your outside stove. If you go to a repair shop that doesn't understand this system, there's a good chance they'll sell you a typical low-pressure regulator that won't provide the proper pressure for the outside stove. The regulator you need, if it does turn out to be a regulator problem, has to come from a Coleman/Fleetwood dealer.

Some people have had problems with the rubber hose for the outside stove getting clogged up and rotten. Your problem could be caused by that.

I just re-read your original post. IF someone replaced your original 2-stage regulator with a single-stage 11 column-inch regulator, it could cause the problem you are describing. Are you the original owner? Do you know whether the regulator is original? All the two-stage Coleman/Fleetwood regulators I've seen have had red plastic "covers." Does yours have this, or is it all metal? If it is all metal I would suspect that someone replaced your two-stage with a single-stage regulator.

Thanks guys for all of the replies.  I am writing this from work, but I know that the cap on the reg is black.... I am not the original owner.  I will look into it more.  I also use propane at home and did not think of taking the PUP to my propane dealer... I am sure they would not hesitate to check it out for me.
