Can I install Air Conditioning myself?

Hi all,

I have a 1998 Coleman Mesa without A/C?  My wife and I are going to spend a week at Zilpo in KY the last week in July (first trip without kids .  I expect it will be hot and I would like to get an air conditioner installed before we go.

Is this an extremely complex install?  I am fairly handy with a toolset but will easily concede if it's too much.  Anybody installed their own?  The prices I've seen aren't bad for a 13.5k btu unit and ceiling unit.

Any info appreciated.

Seen it done on TV, so how hard can it be?  (note sarcasm).  Check your A/C to DC converter and see if you can add a 20 amp AC circuit/breaker. - or you can run wire separate to the supply. If you have the time, go for it.  Try question on popupexplorer.com, too.

I would have a real problem getting up on my roof with a saw and cutting a hole in it.  I'd take it somewhere, that way if there are any leaks you will have someone to blame other than yourself.

I put one in the front wall instead of on the roof. It was cheaper. $90.00 for a 5000 btu AC unit and another $100.00 for wood and misc. parts. But it was laber intensive. Do a search in this section under AC install to see pics.

Welcome to PUT!  Yes you can install your own AC unit.  You need a second person to help you with moving the unit, but it isn't that hard if you are handy with tools.  Good luck with the project.  Take pictures of the process if you can.

And you can save quite a bit of money too. We and some good camping buddies of ours just bought new duotherm 13,500 btu units for our campers. They have a 99 Coleman Mesa and We have a 2001 Seapine. Our friends (husband) installed theirs a couple of weeks ago and he said it was a breeze. Hy hubby is installing ours this weekend. Can't wait! We have done without one for 5 years, and now that the kids are getting older and in more sports, activities, etc., this will give us a lot more times to choose to go. Used to we pretty much never went in July or August, just too hot and humid here in SW Indiana.

Hubby and his buddy got it done yesterday - took about 1.5 hours TOTAL! About 2 hours after they were done, we had a BIG storm, heavy downpours and wind. Went inside after to check it for leaks, absolutely NONE. Hubby says the way these are designed (duo-therm, at least) there is virtually no way they could leak. He didn't use any extra caulking or sealant, etc. on it. And since he is very meticulous to detail, if he thought it needed it, he wouldn't have installed it without it. It was a breeze to install, no way I would pay someone $200 to do that job. Just my opinion.
