I received an oven that sits on top of the propane stove last summer for my birthday. We haven't used it yet and I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas. Last summer my SIL made lasagna in hers - what a yummy treat for camping! She's made cinnamon rolls, too. I was thinking maybe I would make brownies or some cookies or something...but I've never used it and don't want to goof up and end up with uncooked sludge. Ya know?

I'll be checking back for suggestions! We're camping this Friday June 29th until July 5th...

Thanks!!

What kind of oven did you get?? I have both a Coleman camp oven and a Fox Hill oven. My Coleman really needs to be wrapped in foil to keep the heat consistent....the Fox Hill is much better at heat distribution and not burning things on the bottom. You can bake anything in it that you would bake in a normal oven.  If it's the Coleman, rotate it a couple of times for inconsistant baking....the Fox Hill should be fine.   It's wonderful. Nothing like the smell of cookies baking in the afternoon or muffins or cinnamon rolls in the morning! :>

Cool! Glad to know that about wrapping it in foil. After I posted this thread, I saw there were a few posts about this in another thread. Doh! When my SIL made lasagna, it didn't matter much...just needed to heat the cheese through, since the noodles were already hot, as was the sauce. If I get adventurous and do some cookies or brownies, I'll definitely do the foil wrapping, since I have the Coleman. Still in the box, actually.  Never heard of the Fox Hill.  Thanks for the reply. I can't wait to try the oven and make the outdoors smell yummy!

Happy Camping!

I used a Coleman oven occasionally when I was in the Boy Scouts.  Cornbread and Buttermilk biscuits were the main items, and they almost always came out great.

It was used as kind of a rite-of-passage/initiation device!  Only the senior scouts were "worthy" of actually baking with it, the younger scouts watched, learned, and made the baking mix!  We used "custom made" metal flashing strips to block any wind, and a perforated piece as a heat diffuser under the oven.  Our scoutmaster also had disassembled the factory thermometer and actually "calibrated" it so that it really did read the proper temperature, (at least in the biscuit and bread making range).

Check out this link for some recipes from the Fox Hill manufacturers.

I use one of these almost every trip.  I have found that a 8 x 8 square cake pan fits in these as well as the "mini" muffin pans.  8 or 8.5 inches is about as wide a pan as will fit in length as well as width.  I also have a flat cookie sheet made for a toaster oven that fits but use it mostly for biscuits.  I use my square cake pan the most (you can bake biscuits in it, and it helps with the uneven cooking because of the sides).

I take premade cookie dough with us when we go camping (either homemade and chilled or the roll kind from the store).  I put the dough in the square cookie pan just like it was brownies then bake.  Works best on the next to top rack, just watch it carefully.

I bake biscuits too, either making homemade or using a box mix that we like.  Blueberry muffins are another staple for us.  The "canned" cinnamon rolls from the dairy case are another favorite.  I use cornbread/muffin mix and either make mini muffins in the pans or pour into the square cake pan and make a cake of cornbread.

I have also taken frozen dinner rolls, the kind you thaw and let rise and baked them.  Really yummy with a great piece of grilled steak and a salad.

got one myself a few years ago
I ordered an extra rack from coleman, doublng the capacity. works great for frozen french fries and the like.
the down side is i can never get the thing over 400 deg. for high temp work.

The Coleman Oven worked GREAT!! I wrapped it in foil and used it twice. The first time, I baked chocolate chip cookies (the "break and bake" toll house ones). They came out perfect.  Then, when I made bacon for breakfast and needed to keep it warm, my hubby put the oven on the fire grate and we kept the cooked bacon in there while I made the eggs. the bacon came out smoky - yummy! I plan to use it over the weekend of the 10th...my mom is making biscuits and I may bake a dinner in it, or at least cinnamon rolls.

I have a "small bar pan" - stoneware from The Pampered Chef. I used that for baking the cookies. It fits in a toaster oven, so I knew it would fit in the camp oven. The bacon was just wrapped loosely in foil and set in the oven.

Thanks for all the great advise and ideas! Happy Camp cooking and baking everyone!

We've made biscuits, cupcakes/muffins, and cookies (the cut/bake ones).  We too have found the stove top unit needs to be wrapped in foil.  A little experimenting with placement of biscuits before they were edible (we had burned bottoms/gloppy tops).

We've got an oven in our PUP and have done cookies thus far.  Don't like heating the PUP, so might bring along the electric oven for outside cooking and cooking meats or splattery food.

We did homemade biscuits in the camp oven Aug. 11th. for breakfast with sausage gravy....yummy! They turned out great! The foil must really help with keeping the temp even. Hopefully we'll get out one more time this fall, maybe twice. I'll post what I make in the oven each time.

Thanks for your ideas!
