Three things to ALWAYS carry with you when camping

Well hello.  After the night that dh and I had last night I've decided that there are three things that I MUST add to the pup.  These include a large bottle of peroxide, baking soda and dawn dish soap.

Why you might ask??  Last night my sweet curious dog got sprayed by a skunk and the combination of these three things almost completely removed the smell with just one bath!  Combine the peroxide, 1/4 c. soda and 1 tsp. dawn...lather dog avoiding eyes, ears, nose and mouth.  Let it sit for 10 mins and rinse.  Dispose of rest of "shampoo" as it can explode.  If another bath is needed, you must mix a new batch of shampoo, it loses it effectiveness within minutes after being made.  Caution:  this might cause fur to discolor because of the peroxide.

After speaking with my aunt today about what happened, she suggested keeping these items in the camper cause you never know when you might need them!!  Just a little tip from me to you.  So next time you find that rancid smell coming from your pet (or unfortuantely, yourself) skip the tomato juice and grab the peroxide!

The vets (and most of the pet stores) where we lived in Massachusetts recomended Masengil Deuche.  A neighbor had to use it several times with a dog that apparently could not learn.

I second the douche, it works without discoloring the dogs fur (luckily for us it wasn't my dog).
My mother used the peroxide mix on her black dog, it wasn't so black in spots after that bath. Splotches of red appeared.

My vet also suggested the "Skunk Off" mix (otherwise known as the three ingredients here).  She helps out at the emergency clinic, too, and said that's what they always use on pets that are brought in.  To the tune of $150, I might add.  (I didn't have to pay, btw - we learned all this in a freebie pet first aid class she gave).

We added this stuff to our first aid kit and fortunately we have only had to use it once.  We have a pom mix, and she has the blonde/yellow pom coloring.  We had no sign of discoloring.  She was SO pitiful during that 10 minute wait that I had to take a picture of her.  It made for a funny scrapbook page later on, and I called the dog Pepe' for weeks after that happened.

Yes, I read that also...but was quite worried about going into the store at 3 in the morning and buy several boxes.  Then try to convice them that it was for my dog.  Wasn't quite comfortable for that, so I was VERY thankful that the peroxide did the trick.  Our pooch has mostly tan fur so there really wasn't any discoloration.

Now that you mention that... It is funny as all get out! My cuz went to get a box for their dog who got sprayed while we were camping.around midnight,..it was a large dog so they thought maybe a case was in order... while walking thru the store her husband stayed about 4 or 5 steps back. The cashier gave them an odd look and he proceeds to tell her how skanky she was tonight! LOL

Oh and they bought the store brand, it worked quite well.

Speaking of funny, we were in line some time ago at a local pet supply store.  The phone rang, and PJay and I heard the female clerk say "We don't have anything, but Massengil Deuche will work...no, you get it at a drug store...Massengil Deuche...at a drug store...yes, that's what works best."

Everyone in line was just looking embarrased...when PJay and I said at the same time..."something must have tangled with a skunk..."

I imagined the clerk trying to explain it to a 60+ y.o. redneck...

Tomato Juice is about the best I've ever seen.  Been sprayed a couple times hunting/fishing.  Usually keep a big can of generic juice on hand.  Stand in the tub or shower, pour it slowly from head to toe, scrub and work around, let stand for a couple minutes then rinse.  Shower with soap and shampoo.  Smell's gone.
