Dumb idea -- Florida in June?

Due to DD's school schedule, we won't be able to do our usual spring break trip to Key Largo, Pennekamp State Park.  We're thinking about going in June, right after school gets out.  We saw on the reservation web site that most sites were open then and that got us to wondering why?  I know this is the very start of hurricane season but is there another reason why no one is camping in Florida then?  Bugs?  Heat?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I don't think that hurricane season would detour many. they don't usually start getting hurricanes coming on shore until after August. October is their worst month.

I would think that winter is typically Florida's best season. That's when all the "Snow Birds" (people escaping the snow) come down.

As a southwest Floridian let me tell you -- heat, humidity and mosquitoes. Mostly the first two. If you don't have A/C, don't even think about it. It might be a little cooler with some of the breezes off the ocean, but you can't count on it. You might get the odd tropical storm or cat 1 hurricane in June on the east coast, but the chances are low.

I was at Pennekamp in June of last year and we did have a heavy rain storm, but if you have a/c, there's nothing wrong with camping there in June.

We are leaving for Florida next week. We learned a long time ago that when camping in the deep south in the summer you have to do one thing. Come to the realization that your going to get hot and sweaty, that you will get some rain and that you need to use plenty of sunscreen and bug spray. Once you accept these facts, it's really not bad and you can go on and enjoy your stay. Most of the time we are in the water anyway so that keeps us cool. We have an AC on our popup so sleeping at night is very comfortable. In addition to the screened room that attaches to our awning we use bug spray at the campsite and burn citronela candles so we really done have bug issues. As far as the rain goes, can I say "Nap Time". Oh yeah I also need to mention that I live in south Louisiana and if we let little things like heat, humidity, bugs and rain stand in our way of a summertime camping trip. We'd never leave the house.

Go, adapt and enjoy.

I live in south Florida all year round, one thing you can not predict in florida is the weather. June is typically hot but not as bad as July and August. Our season down here starts mid October and runs thru April. Summer time brings the beach goers but not necessarily campers. I am new to PUP camping but we did a long weekend last month will be going in 2 weeks and have a weekend picked out in August. Many have told us we are nuts to go in the summer but we have the A/C to sleep in and we are going places that have pools we are happy. The Keys should be nice in June, bugs come out at dusk. The rains in May will determine just how bad the bugs are but Key Largo should not be as bad as being way west inland. If you have any questions about the area feel free to e-mail me directly.

Thanks everyone.  We do have a/c and we made reservations for 10 days at Pennekamp starting exactly one year from today.  I'd much rather go at spring break but I'm sure this will be great, also.
