Okay, here I go sounding stupid again. Our fixer-upper did not have an awning--of course. Any ideas for a "homemade" one until the budget permits a nice one? Some friends of ours tried to describe a version an acquaintence of theirs did with a tarp, electrical fishing tape? and old tent poles. I read somewhere about a version with PVC pipe, but can't find it now.

Thanks as usual!

I don't know about home made but here's a deal on a 1st class awning that you just can't afford to pass up. I bought one from this eBay seller a couple weeks ago:

11' awning for 12' PU:

9' awning for 10' PU:

Does your camper have the strip already on for the awning?  if it does, it wouldn't be that hard to rig up one from a cheap tarp with some simple sewing skills.

Ours (a 1973 Starcraft) is basically an open tube, that you slip the edge of the canvas into - it stays put because there is a thick rope in the 'hem' edge of the canvas - kind of like a cordage trim on a pillow or cushion.  A couple of grommets for the corners, (or tarp ties) , K-mart aluminum tent poles and ropes, and you're set.

Thank you!! The pup does have the rails. I guess I can find rope that will slide in the rail. Someone suggested buying poles with pins at the top to go through the grommets. I guess we would then use the grommets to attatch ropes to stakes also. Would any heavy duty tarp work?

Thanks!!

I would suggest a tarp with reinforced grommets and choose a size that fits your camper.  As long as one side of the tarp is close to the length of your camper, or a foot shorter, you'll be good. Not sure how much the poles will cost but the tarp and rope should be pretty cheap.

An yes on the stakes.  The pins on the poles would go through the grommet, then tie off on the pins and/or grommets to the stakes.  I just tie off on the pole pin, makes it easier to dismantle.

I'll put a picture in my camping pics, in just a few minutes.  It is not a close up but gives you an idea of what I did.  Also, I did not have the correct size of rope when I decided to do it, so I tied off with 4 ropes over the camper.  That was the hard part.

You can buy adjustable tent poles at Wally World, i'm not sure how much they are but like most other things they are realitively inexpensive

Wavery,
You posted a link to the awnings that are listed on eBay; I'm thinking of ordering the 11' awning.  I have a 1999 Coachmen Clipper (12'); when I bought it, the awning was not with it, but the rail and the pole brackets on the side of the camper are there.  My question is, since you have already ordered one, does any hardware come with the awning or is it just the awning material?  And also, when you ordered yours, how long did it take for you to get it?

Thanks! found a tarp--super heavy duty and explored sewing rope to slide into channel--will finish next week. Also, found the tent poles. Also, under gereral camping on another site, we saw a flower-pot awning base mod that we're going to try too. Thank you so much for the info!

It comes with all the hardware. It took about 3 days to get it. I think that you may be quite impressed. I still can't believe it.

That is an AWESOME deal, especially when you consider Campingworld is selling them at the following prices:
Awning Width: 11 Feet  Awning SKU 20029:
Member Price:   $239.00
Regular Price: $265.56

Ordered mine the other night and am awaiting arrival.  DH does not know I have ordered it; when it arrives he will find out that he has a new project to keep him busy, but I know he will be be a "happy camper" because he will be able to relax and stay a little cooler when we are camping next weekend.

Thanks to all who assisted me in making the decison to take advantage of this great opportunity for a quality awning.

You won't believe the cost of this "homemade" awning. Bought a $7.49 heavy duty gray UV resistant 9 X 11 tarp at Harbor Freight along with a rope for $2.99 that we mistakenly thought would fit the channed--will use it to stake the 2 front ends instead. Then I checked at BassPro for adjustable replacement tent poles--the suggested 3. They were $9.99 each--on a tight budget, so refused this option. Double checked Wal-mart today and they had 5 of the same poles for $5 each on clearance. When I took 3, the sales guy stopped me and marked them down to $1 each--they had them in stock for years and no buyers. Anyway, I bought all 5 for $5 and the right rope for the channel at $2.09. Total awning cost including tax--less than $20. Then, we plan to do the flower pot awning base mod--bought 3 pots at Dollar General for $1 each. Still have to pick up the PVC pipe, concrete mix and eye-bolts--probably another $10-15--still cheap. Thanks to all for the ideas and advice!!

It's really simple to assemble. I recommend reading the instructions completely then laying out the parts and reading the instructions again. Once you familiarize yourself with the parts, it's really easy to assemble and install. It took me under an hour from opening the box to opening the awning, on the camper.
