Lori, What's the difference between crocheting and Knitting? I bought a book for beginners on crocheting and the materials and I can't even figure out how to start.:(

Quote from: griffsmomHey Kwisti, if you'd like, this might be a good weekend to teach you how to knit.  Let me know if that sounds good to you. :)

If anyone else would like to learn as well (men and children too!) let me know and I'll post what supplies you'll need to buy. I was thinking a scarf would be fun--it's easy, relatively inexpensive, and can be finished quickly enough that you'll be wearing what you made before winter is over!

DDs and I would like to learn to knit a scarf!!  Please just let us know what materials to purchase!  What fun!

I don't crochet, but my understanding is that crocheting is done using one hook and making chains of stitches and then connecting those stitches in various ways to make rows and patterns. Knitting is done using 2 knitting needles to make rows of stitches that build upon one another. You can make the stitches differently to make different patterns or shapes. I taught myself how to knit but I can't figure out how to crochet for the life of me!

Excellent! This should be a ton of fun.  Can't you just see us now--all sitting around the campfire at night with knitting needles in one hand and cactus coolers in the other!! :J

now that's funny right there...maybe we should get rocking folding chairs too... :p

my grandmother crocheted. I have a couple of her afgans still and the baby outfits she did for my sister over 50 years ago!!

I'll ask Kara. I see it as another project I won't finish.

I'm in site #13 ...

I'll make sure Jed doesn't mistake balls of yarn for his toys.  :D

Those rockers better have a jet fast speed setting on them. We may be knitting, but we'll be doing it with massive amounts of energy drink in our systems!   :yikes:

You mean to tell me DH doesn't know?  With all the talk about old age around here, I thought he would be the xpert on such things.  Man this group is starting to scare me!  Pretty soon we will have to start looking for CG with 20 handicap spots.....

Attention all knitters: I took a little trip to Michaels and JoAnns and here are some suggestions for supplies:

Michaels:
  • Lion Brand "Vanna's choice" (on sale for $2.99/skein)
  • Lion Brand Wool Ease (on sale for $2.99/skein)
  • Patons Shetland Chunky or Chunky Tweed (on sale for $4.99/skein)
JoAnns also carries the Lion Brand yarns but can be hit or miss on the Patons.

Just to be safe, buy 2 skeins of whichever yarn you choose per scarf. That will also give you the option of fringe if desired. Lighter colors will show the pattern better than darker yarns.

As for knitting needles, you'll need size US 10, and bamboo (or other inexpensive wood) will be easier in the beginning than plastic or metal, which are both much more slippery.

Let me know if you have any questions.

EDITED TO ADD: If you buy two or more skeins, be sure that the dye lot numbers on the labels match. Otherwise, the color of your two skeins could be off ever so much as to bother you and you'll never wear what you made. And that's just a plain shame.
