We went to this National Park last weekend with a group of 5 families from Randy's work.  We rented a group site at Hat Creek campground.  It ended up costing each family $20 for the weekend.  I believe the site was $80 A Nnight and it held 50 people.  I think there are 75 regular sites and 3 group sites.  There were vault toilets and running water available.  One thing I wasn't too thrilled about was the dirt.   The cg dirt is very fine (reminds me of ash) and blow's all over and into everything.

The setting was beautiful.  High pine trees and a creek (Hat creek) running thru the backside of the cg.  Temps were mild for the summer time.  85 during the day and 50's at night.  It is set at 4,300 ft so it gets you out of the Sacramento heat.   It is close to Mac Arthur/Burney State Park which houses Burney Falls.  This falls was breathtaking and flows all year round.  It is fed by an underground spring so it never dries up with the weather.  Another neat thing to see was Subway Cave.  It is a lava tube formed thousands of years ago.  Bring a flashlight and enjoy.  VERY COOL!!

All in all this was a neat place to visit.  Very few crowds for a National Park.  We will definately go back.

Hat Creek is one of the prime fly fishing streams in CA.  Been to the campground several times and have always liked it.  As for the dirt - well now you are not in the sierras anymore you are in the cascades and with the difference in geologic formation the dirt will be different.  One other thing - Hat creek CG is not in Lassen National Park.  It is about 20 miles north of the park but in Lassen National Forest (I think - maybe Modoc but it's been awhile).

Lots of neat national forest campgrounds in the area.....

Hey  Jacqui,
We were got back from Hat Creek on Monday night.  Had been there since Monday the 6th.  Nice area!  We always stay at Hereford Ranch RV park.  Nice grass sites with water and elec.  Did you tour Subway cave?  Pretty cool place.

I tried my hand at fly fishing and it was fun.  Didnt catch anything but was still fun.

Yes, we went to subway caves.  VERY COOL!!  We stayed in the group sites at the back of the cg.  I was amazed at the amount of water in Hat Creek.  Come to find out it is fed from an underground spring..

Randy is a fly fisherman too.  He has been doing it for probably 10 years.  He knew this place was good for fishing but didn't bring his gear.  We were with a group and if he brought his gear we would of never seen him the whole weekend.  He scoped it  out and the next time we go he is planning on fishing.

We actually had to rough it the whole weekend.  The water line under the sink cracked and we had no water the whole weekend.   It brought back to us why we bought a popup.  I hate hauling water and then having to boil it anytime I want hot water.
