There is a story of an astronomer who was talking to a group of 5th graders about the Milky Way.  He kept asking questions about it, but something seemed missing.  Then it struck him -- none of these kids had ever seen the Milky Way; to them it was a candy bar, and nothing more.

Sadly, most Americans have never actually seen the Milky Way.  Even those like us who go camping under dark skies seldom take the time to walk to a dark field and look up, because they don't realize there is something amazing to see up there.

I have made a point of taking my kids out to see the stars if we're camping under a clear, moonless night.  I have known for a long time that if I didn't do it, nobody else would.

I guess that I've taken it for granted that I can see the Milky Way almost every clear night by just going outside and looking up.

There is nothing like being hundreds of miles out at sea, on a small sailboat with no lights and no moon and a calm sea. The light from the stars is amazing and enough to work on deck with no lights.

I used to lay out on deck with a pair of binoculars and just stair at the sky for hours......of course....there wasn't much else to do at that point.. :p

Pray for wind?

That used to be the story of my life :p ....however...I learned to be much more specific in that prayer ....(prayers are answered BTW..). The prayer was for "Fair winds", preferably on the Beam at 15-20kts with a calm sea.

Now it's "light breeze and no rain". :sombraro:

I suppose one small hurricane would be more than enough to cure even the dumbest landlubber of such a broad and uncontained prayer...  :eyecrazy:

Shooting stars tonight, to hazy here to see them.

AB I bet you got the link for them, maybe someone else will be able to enjoy them.

Never take it for granted.  I go camping far enough away that the stars are ablaze in the sky, or so I'm told.

I haven't seen stars (as they should be seen) for years now ..

I can never get the optometrist to give me a STRONG enough prescription of glasses.
