I have questions about air conditioners on pop-ups. What are the advantages and dis-advantages of having them up on top of the roof? Is there a better location?

In a word, NO. Cold air sinks, hot air rises. So the higher the cold/cooler air enters the volume to be cooled the more even the cooling. Place it lower and you tend to get striated air with hotter near the ceiling and colder near the floor.

YEP and it doesn,t take up floor space

You live in Texas. Get air conditioning. Put it on top, if your popup's roof can handle it. Pretty much end of story. :)

I agree with everything said. Install that AC on the roof and you will be glad you did.

Our A/C is installed in the back wall of our PUP.  It definitely requires a couple of fans to circulate the air to the ceiling but works well with that assistance.  We bought the PUP with this setup and we are happy with it.  The rooftop units are slightly more expensive and some require special roof bracing and sealing but they are out of the way (my kids are always kicking the front or the A/C when getting into the bunk) and circulate the air much better.  Of course, installing an A/C in the back wall requires cutting into the wall and doing some planning to make sure it is braced and secure.

Good luck

My Fleetwood Niagara has the roof AC (Carrier Air-V), and it is wonderful.  Great air circulation to both bunk ends for comfortable sweat-free sleeping.  Having the pop-up Gizmos makes it easier for the AC to keep the PUP at a comfortable temp.  Living and camping in the humid heat of Maryland and surrounding states, an AC is almost a necessity for comfort.

The best place for an AC unit is on the roof, if your roof will support the weight.  Good luck with your AC.:)

Dear TXSARGE,
Thank You. I have a 1980 Coleman Gettysburg where I put the A/C on the trail tongue. So much less expensive than a roof mounted A/C. The used Fleetwood I am dreaming about doesn't have an a/c.

All great advice as usual, we have AC and glad we do, it was a requirement when we shopped for our PUP. The advantages are obvious.

Disadvantages are the extra weight, you have to add that weigh to your GVWR which means you

Our camper didnt come with air so we had to add it ourselves. The top is a manual lift, not a crank up, so roof mount was out of the question. We elected to mount it in the rear wall at floor level. Only lost 2" of floor space under dinette.  The down sides are, the rear bunk dosent get direct ac flow but redirected by a fan. Second, the slide out bed up front get alot more ac air then the bunkend.  But thats my bed so thats fine by me, plus DW get air after passing over my contaminated air space.hehehe

We just returned from 2 weeks in South Carolina where the temp was 115 with the heat index at times.  We bought our Hemlock in June with this trip in mind and were so unbelievably and extemely grateful for the air conditioning.  I'm not an air conditioner person but I quickly became a convert.   :frosty:   If we had not bought the Hemlock we would have installed one in the Palomino...there are many folks who have done AC mods with a standard home AC unit.

Had we not had the AC we would have been found dried up like beef jerky...they'd have had to do DNA tests to ID us!

Funny, that's how we do it too ;-).  Here is a pic or our A/C outside.  Sorry I don't have one of the inside but just as a note, ours didn't use any floor space because the track for the roof cables is in a small 'box' that runs along the floor against the wall.
