There is a live IRC chat held every Monday from 8:00pm Eastern Time to 10:00pm Eastern Time (that's 5:00pm Pacific to 7:00pm Pacific). Some of us have been doing this for many years. I first logged on in 2000 or 2001, and there were many that chatted there for years before I first did.

For those who know how to use IRC, We will be on the FreenNode IRC network using channel: #pop-up-trailers. There are some other networks with #pop-up-trailers channels, but we ran into too many problems with them, so all others have been abandoned.

The Freenet server is at irc.us.freenode.net.

For those to whom IRC chat is new, you need to start by downloading an IRC client. To download an IRC chat program for Windows, go to <http://www.mirc.com/>. I believe mIRC also now has an Apple client. Most Linux installations come with an IRC client.

These instructions are for the Windows mIRC client:

Download and install the correct client.

Launch mIRC. You should get a mIRC Options screen. You will need to enter a "real name" (I advise against using your real name) and an "email address". Again, I advice against using your real email address. Then enter a Nickname and an alternate nickname. If your nickname is too common, such as "Bob," you will not be allowed to use it.

Switch to the "Servers" item on the Category tree. Select IRC Network "FreeNode," and IRC Server "FreeNode: Random server." Click OK.

The above steps should only have to be done once.

The steps below will have to be done every time you chat:

Connect to the Freenode server by clicking the lightening bolt icon on the far left.

After several seconds (and a few beeps) you should be connected. If you get prompted for a password, DO NOT ENTER ONE. It means the Nickname you chose has been registered by someone else. You will need to choose another one.

If all is well so far, join us by typing:
/join #pop-up-trailers
into the bottom of the screen. You need to type it exactly, or you will end up in an empty room. There are ways to automate this, but let's start simple.

If you run into problems, reply to this post and I will try to answer your questions.

More information:
IRC Chat is similar to MSN Live Messenger except - it can be used with ANY computer connected to the internet, and it has fewer bells and whistles.

It can get chaotic. Imagine a large room with a number of people in the room, and everyone is talking at once. If you read fast, it helps, but we have slower times.

All of us have had trouble following the conversation at times, particularly when we were first starting. We're a good group of people, and we have a competent and patient channel operator (who acts like a moderator).
We keep the conversation family-friendly.

The IRC pop-up chat (which has been around in various places for more than 10 years) is open to anyone with any internet-connected computer, including Linux/Unix, Macs, WinTel, and many others.

It is almost impossible to put up a web-based chat that can do that.

We had some great times in the old PUT chatroom - I think it would be fun to have one again.
