Hi,

My wife and I have been tent camping for years. We have been talking about getting a PUP for a while and settled on spring 2008 to get one. Last weekend we visited an RV show and decided to also visit a dealer nearby. The dealer had just taken a 2005 Fleetwood Bayside CP as a trade in. The PUP really looked new. It also has some added goodies such as a second propane bottle and the roof rack. The slide out makes it so roomy. Didn't take us too long to decide.

We'll be towing with a Toyota Tacoma Xcab 3.4L V6 Prerunner TRD, rated at 5000 lbs. The Fleetwood dealer advised to get a sway bar and a Prodigy brake controller, which they'll take care off.
He didn't say anything about insurance other than letting my insurance broker know we bought a popup. Wouldn't it be best to get full ins coverage?

Do I need towing mirrors? Anything else I should be aware of? I'd like to bring her home in one piece.

We're in N CA so hopefully we can squeeze in one more trip before winter. We're so excited!

Im a tacoma owner too.   You will not need extended mirrors.   how much does the pop up weigh?  I just hauled 2000#s with my 06 tacoma v6 with no brakes and no problems.  Though I do plan on hooking my pop up electric brakes up next season.     Post some pictures

Congrats on you find!! If i were you i would get the brake controller, a PU is alot of weight to be pulling and if you have to make a sudden stop that extra weight in the back without brakes is going to make it real hard to stop. Dont take a chance with you familys safety. I think everyone here will agree with me!!! Ed C.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice. With a gross weight of 3500 lbs I'll get the Prodigy for sure, as well as the sway bar. Safety first indeed.

Shopping for insurance now. I'll report back.

We got our first popup this summer and I tow with an xterra , you feel the wait and YES  elec. brakes is highly recommended, I dont need mirrors I can see around it and some what over depending on the load I have in the back of the car, LOL  I have had a time or two when I wished I had a sway bar( my Fault  made a jerky move) on my list of needs. keep the weight up front

Congratulations on the new PU.  I am happy your dealer is suggesting the Prodigy for your brake controller and a sway bar.  The Bayside is well know for swaying.  I would also recommend that you take something heavy to put in the front trunk for the trip home.  The second propane bottle will help, but you need some tongue weight to reduce the risk of sway.  Enjoy your camper and go out and use it!:)
