No, it hasn't be reviewed in PUT. This is the first I'v heard of it too.
For some reason Carefree of CO won't give us the time of day and they should. I'd love it if some of you would contact them and ask if they advertise in PUT or if their products have been reviewed.

I installed one on Hersheygirl's Palomino PU this spring.  It was not hard to do and as far as I know she hasn't had any problems with it.  Too bad they will not advertise on PUT.

I guess I dont really see the point in that setup, I dont think its that tough to crank it up, and I'm in full control of raising and lowering, in case something weird would happen.

Yes, tlhdoc did install the electric lift on my trailer this spring. I have not had any problems with it and think it has been one of the best mods that I have done to the camper. It is so easy to popup now, takes less than about 30 seconds to go up. Maybe your roof is easy to crank up, but my Pal's roof is 13.5 feet with an a/c on it and it was a bear for me to crank up....and I camp with kids or by myself often, so the electric lift was a godsend. Call me a wuss if you like, but I love my power lift. With this lift, you can control how fast it goes up and can stop and start anytime. Don't knock it if you haven't see it or tried it. :p

That is crummy that Carefree of Colorado won't advertise in PUT...I even have a Carefree of Co. Campout awning that I just love.  I had put one on my previous camper and liked it so well that I put the same type on my new camper.  Go figure.

Your first one is holding up just fine!  I love it too.  I can actually set that one up by myself if I have to ... the kids are big enough to help and I'm always happy to find chores for them to do.   :p

Anyway ~ I agree ... Carefree is missing out on a pretty good opportunity for some well-placed ad dollars.  I'm not ready for a power lift (I have 4 of them) ... but their awnings are awesome.

That's what I have sons for. My 9 year old can crank up my Niagara by himself.

How do you keep from over cranking going both up and down, and is there a way to crank by hand if the need arrises without having to un-install the unit.

HersheyGirl

There are stops that you set up when installing the electric lift, easy to do and they work great so you can't go too high and it goes all the way down.  There is a manual overide screw that will take the roof up or down if there is a problem with the electric lift.  From people that I know who have had this lift for sometime, no one has ever had a problem with it not working.  So far the only problem was when the battery was drained and then the lift would not work.  Once the battery was charged, the lift worked like a charm.

When installing the power lift you set the the lower limit, and then raise the top completely.  Set the top limit and you are done.  No over doing it up or down.  :)

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL NOTICE

September 14, 2007

To:    All Carefree Folding Camping Trailer (FCT) Winch OEM and Distributor Customers

Subject:    Voluntary Safety Recall (Carefree FCT Winch)

Carefree of Colorado has determined that a potential defect which relates to safety of camper winches may exist in Folding Camping Trailers equipped with Carefree of Colorado FCT lift mechanism winches that were manufactured between February 2007 and August of 2007.

We have reported this issue to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and to the National Highway Transportation Administration and will work with them on a procedure for notifying customers and recording completion of recall activities.  We will notify you as soon as possible with information you can provide to your customers.

Until such time that these procedures are approved, Carefree, with your help, will attempt to identify, isolate and repair/replace as many of the units as possible. These repair/replacement units will be included in the overall recall quantities.

According to our records, involved Models have been shipped and invoiced to your company.

Problem: An incorrect material was used in the manufacture of cable shafts on some production units.  Under certain circumstances while the top is being lifted, if the winch is placed into a stall condition, the cable shaft may break prior to the fuse or circuit breaker tripping.  If the cable shaft breaks, the FCT top will free-fall into the lowered position.  A stall condition can occur by: (1) improper setting of the winch limit switch, (2) seizure of the FCT where the winch is activated to raise the FCT top without releasing the top locking latches, or (3) any other mechanical binding that may restrict the top from being raised while the winch is activated.

Solution: Upon identification and isolation of the affected product, the cable shaft will be replaced.

Until the unit(s) is serviced, please ensure the following:
   no one should ever be permitted inside the trailer until it is raised and locked,
   keep hands and people clear of the top as it is being raised,
   don
