Wondering if anyone has camped at Blackwoods and has any insight on a good site to reserve.  We are a family of 4 so we need roomy site.  Any information on good cheap eats in the area would be helpful as well.

I have camped at Blackwoods many times.  You can't reserve a specific site.  You make your reservation for the type of equipment you will be camping in. When you get to the campground the staff will have assigned you a site.  If you don't like it and there are other sites for the equipment you are using unoccupied they will let you switch.  Enjoy your stay there.  I haven't been there for several years and really miss it.:)

We camped at Blackwoods when we went to Acadia several years ago. I seem to recall that it's the way tlhdoc says - you can't reserve a specific site.

I loved that campground, and have some very good memories of it. One thing I liked was that they made firewood available free of charge.

Nice places to eat? We had a memorable breakfast of blueberry muffins and pancakes at a nice place in Bar Harbor. It may have been Jordan's.

Enjoy your trip! Thinking about it makes me want to go back. Maybe we'll see you there!

Yes that is Jordan's Restaurant, not to be confused with Jordan's Pond which is a park concession.  We love eating at both places.:)

You may want to consider the other Acadia campground, Seawall Campground.  They don't take reservations at all and would be less crowded.  You may have your pick of sites there.  It is more "off the beaten path", but when we were at Acadia this past August, Seawall was almost empty when Blackwoods was filled.

For a nice inexpensive restaurant, park your car in downtown Bar Harbour and begin walking the streets.  Take in the shops and harbour atmosphere, look at the menus displayed in the windows 'till you find something appealing at the price you're looking for.

We did that one evening looking for ice cream. Would you believe we found one place selling lobster-flavored ice cream? (We passed it up.)

I would pass it up too.  I'd be afraid the ice cream would get runny when I drizzled the melted butter over it!

NO NO NO Dave.  Take the free bus and leave your car at the campground.:)

That would be Bill and Ben's.  Wonderful ice cream there.  Don't worry Dave the butter will not melt the ice cream.  It is in the ice cream.  DS had it one time, it is vanilla ice cream with chunks of lobster meat and little tiny drops of butter.  I don't like sea food, so YUCK in my book.  What a way to ruin good vanilla ice cream.:)

We stayed at Blackwoods last year and will again this year, increasing the stay by a day.
Can't reserve specific sites but tell them what you need at check in.
Re: Restaurants, we went to Jordan's (pancakes were HEAVY) and others, found our cooking at the campground was better than any of the restaurants! Go to Parson's Lobster pound, get some Mussels, Steamers and/or lobsters. Pour some Pinot Grigio into a pot with Garlic cloves (1/2 a head) and 3 sliced shallots, add the Mussles and steam until they open. Yum!
It's a beautiful part of the Maine coast, that we plan to return to every summer.

We used the bus when we were going various places in the park.  We did take it to Bar Harbor once, but the afternoon/eveing we wanted to spend in Bar Harbor, we drove ourselves.  Sherrie wanted to do laundry, so we had quite a bit to drag along with us.  We did laundry, then found a place to park in the public lot at the harbor.  It was right in the downtown area and was a great place from which to walk the city streets.

I figured the butter taste would be in the lobster ice cream, I was just trying to be funny about making mushy ice cream.  :)

Dave I know you were just joking about the ice cream.  We don't always use the bus, but I wanted to point out that there are free busses.  You don't have to defend yourself.:)

I thought we were going to keep Blackwoods  secret?

Already have my reservations there for August 2 through August 9.

Blackwoods is a very nice campground and we have been going up there for many years.

With four of you, a warning, there are no showers in the cg but there are flush toilet.  Private shower outside of the gate.  I think it is about $2 a shower, woman take $4. :)  Water and a dump station are near the entrance.  Water spigots throughout the park.

Once you are there, you can ride the LL Bean trolley's all over the park and into Bar Harbor.  Pickup and drop off are right in Blackwoods.   They are free.

With the kids, you will enjoy the Ranger programs.  Well done and they have a nice amphitheater there.

There are plenty of commercial things there that are on the pricey side but there is so much to do that is free.

Plenty of restaurants there  but some can be pricey.  Check out some of the lobster pounds in the rough or pick some clams, mussels or lobsters up and cook them at the campsite.

I would strongly suggest that you make reservations soon as the cg does fill up quickly.

Park admission is $20 and camping is $20 a night, all dry camping.

Enjoy, Acadia is a beautiful place and be sure not to miss a sunset at the top of Cadillac Mountain.

Advantage of Blackwoods over Seawall is that you are right in the middle of the interesting stuff.  Seawall will result in more driving.

Also, all of the sites are wooded so there is enough shade.

Thanks for all the information.  I'm getting ready to make my reservations for August 8th - 14th.

Looks like we may overlap by one day.

If you are strolling around on the evening of the 8th or early on  the ninth, please stop in and say hi.

Look for a Silver Silverado 2500HD and a Jayco 28 RLS.  Also two LaFuma chairs under the awning.

Since we have the tt, we will most likely  be over on the "A" loop, I think.
