I have found that my large DO is not good for making desserts.  Its too deep.  What size works the best for desserts?
I made apple crisp (twice) and it did not crisp the may I like...

What size DO are you using?

I have used both my Lodge#10 and the campchef (odd sized at 13") for deserts. You can use a round cake pan if the oven is to large. I use either a foil throw away or a deep springform in my larger pot. Create air space below the pan with like sized pebbles of balls of foil if you don't have a trivet.

Have you played with adding an extra coal or 2 to the top part way thru to crisp up the top?

Hey Dieter,

I'm not sure how big your "large DO" is, but Dave just bought me a 10" deep DO. It was hard as all get-out to try and find it--I've wanted one for a couple of years, and Dave had to call a Lodge outlet store in Georgia and have them ship it. it arrived on Friday just in time for our rally this past weekend. It's 5 qts instead of 4 and 3.5" deep instead of 3". I tried it out for the first time this past weekend and I think it will be my favorite DO. My 12" DO is too big when it's just Dave, Mom, Griff and me, so this new 10" deep will compliment my 10" regular DO very nicely.

I actually like my desserts in a little deeper DO so that the top doesn't burn. But if crisp is what you're aiming for, how about a regular 12" DO, assuming you'll be sharing that apple crisp at a potluck--it's big around but not that deep and I think toppings would crisp fairly well. If it's just you, Dawnne and the boys, I'd go with a regular 10" DO.

Just my .02 :)

Thanks.  Not really sure if it was the recipe or the oven but I have had the same problem before.  I am not sure how deep mine is, without dragging out to the garage to look.  I wll take your advice and begin my search.

LODGE OUTLET STORE?!!  Oh my do they have a website??

I don't think so.. Dave has been looking for that odd-sized deep 10" for me forever. I think he's been randomly calling any place that might possibly sell DO stuff trying to find it for me. If that ain't true love, I don't know what is!  Dave just told me no Web site, but he found out about the outlet store on the idos.org Web site and just called them and described what he was looking for and they happened to have one. You might try giving them a call and explaining your dilemma and see what they suggest.

Of course, Marcy's suggestion of just putting more coal on the top is a good one too. Good luck on your seach!

Tried that, it was supposed to be done in 50 minutes, when after over an hour it still wasn't brown I dumped the coals from the bottom on the lid, and let it cook some more.. no luck...

Dieter, the phone number for the Lodge Outlet in Georgia is 706-335-4875. Good Luck. They were very helpful in finding a Lodge deep 10" camping dutch oven.

Lodge made a special run of 10" deep Camp Ovens (the ones with the legs & rim on the lid that everyone else calls Dutch Ovens) for Sportsman's Warehouse.  That is where we got our 10" deep DO.  It has the Sportsman's Warehouse logo on the cover.  If you have a SW around, you might check to see if they have any left.

Most SW cast iron with the SW logo is made by Camp Chef.  The Lodge 10" with a SW logo is an unusual exception.

As far as I can tell, they don't ship.  Here is their store locator:
