Yesterday, I recieved a mailer from my local Cabela's and the item that caught my eye the most was a portable rechargeable A/C. It's powered by 110, 12 volt or eight rechargeable D-cell batteries. They claim in the ad that it "Lowers temperature in tents, and campers by 30 degrees", it will also operate for 24 hours on batteries.

All this for $79.99........Are you kidding me?....WOW

If this thing works half as good as they say it will, I'll buy one today for those summer time dry camping trips, or those summer time tent camping trips.

By the way the item number is 51-8260.

Happy Camping!

Fuhgeddaboutit. Note it uses ice and "misting technology." That means it will need low humidity to function. Also note it says it will run for 24 hours not COOL for 24 hours. That's 'cause the ice in these types of A/C lasts about half an hour. This is just a high-tech swamp cooler. If they don't work in the humidity of a Virginia summer, I can't imagine that a bayou campsite would be any different.

BTW, I feel your pain. I'm a boondocker and once or twice a summer my bunkend fans just aren't enough.

Yeah but for $80.00 I bet it is a least worth it. I know if I were out and about in the heat, Being a little cooler is worth that much to me. Besides, if it does not work it can be returned!

When I was a little tyke, I was amused by Disneyland's Carousel of Progress ride.  During the second scene a 1920's home was shown with a fan blowing air over a pile of ice!

Living in Southern California, it gets over 100 degrees on some summer days, so I HAD to try what I had seen at Disneyland!! :D

I was about five years old and I piled all the ice from our freezer into a big Pyrex mixing bowl that I borrowed from mom, and stuck a big reciprocating fan behind it! :p

It's performance was very underwelming! :(  Hopefully that newfangled $80 device works much better!

I remember when I was young (in the 50's) my dad had a '55 Chevrolet and he bought a window "AC" unit (swamp cooler) from JC Whitney.

It was just like what you described. You put as much ice as you could in the thing and rolled the window up against it. You had to open the window on the other side, just enough to allow for circulation. We were so excited because you could put your hand up to it and feel the cool air coming out. However, after about 15 minutes, we were soaked with sweat and couldn't stand having the window closed any more.

I guess what I am saying is.......this isn't "New" technology and it only works in extremely dry areas because it introduces a lot of moisture into the atmosphere.

BTW.....don't even think about using dry ice. The amount of carbon dioxide that it would give off could be lethal.

Is this not the old "swamp cooler" technology ...?

Will probably work wonders in the western deserts, not too good for eastern North Carolina hot summer muggy nights.
