Is anyone towing with a landcruiser?  If so, what kind of mileage are you getting?

Well you and I are kind of a rarity in this area.  I have a 2001 LX470 that is my TV.  I will say that I very satisfied with it and spent a great deal of time researching the Landcruiser before purchasing one with the intent to tow a PUP.  This is a great TV, but doesn't show up on most buyers radar as a vehicle to consider.

I tow a Starcraft 14RT and weigh in at about 4,000 pounds when fully loaded.  I use and Equalizer WDH and Prodigy P3 brake controller and am very comfortable towing with this setup.  I've towed with my LX about 5,000 miles with this setup including a trip to Ft. Wilderness in Florida from Maryland with no issues.  In stop and go traffic, I will average about 10 mpg and when on the Interstate (cruising at 65), I average about 12 mpg.  Not great, but not horrible either and my family loves the comfort and room when not traveling as well.

My rated limit is 6,500 pounds as you stated, however, I thought the 04 Landcruiser was changed to a 5,500 pound rating.  IIRC, the hitch was changed to an integrated style with the receiver located in the bumper.  When this change was made, the rating was lowered by 1,000 pounds.  Another difference between ours is the introduction of the 5 speed transmission in 2003 with a 5hp gain added on as well.  There has been some debate on the advantages of the 5 speed, but most real world testing gives it a 1mpg advantage if any.  For more information on the Landcruiser including testimonials from drivers who tow at or beyond its rated limit, visit //www.ih8mud.com.  This site has a great deal of information on the capabilities of the Landcruiser.

Thanks so much.  Mine is rated at 6500.  the hitch is not integrated into the bumper.  Good to hear about the mpg.  That is not to bad of a hit.  Have you added a tranny cooler?  Taking my maiden voyage this weekend.

Have you checked to see if you already have a transmission cooler?  My understanding is that all Landcruisers are equipped with one from the factory.  The tow package only adds the hitch and wiring harness.  From the factory all 98-02 had 4.30 rear end gears which changed to 4.10's in 2003 and the 5 speed transmission introduction, so there were no gearing options either.
