we are trying to plan a trip from Augusta Ga up to Washington DC around June 6. We have no clue where to look for campsites, is there anyone that could suggest something for us. We plan on leaving here on the 6th and going straight there, staying 2-3days there and then take our time heading back home. Will have 8 yr old son with us anything that is a must see or do.He LOVES fishing and history... this was his idea... we have never been that far on trip with the popup....we just stay close to home. Any help would be wonderful, thanks

If you want to do sight seeing in DC, you will find Cherry Hill CG to be best, closest with Metro at entry. (College Park, MD)

Used 2B PopUPTimes

My kids love the Smithsonian Museums, they are free and very well done.  You can go on-line and see which one will be the best fit for your interests.  The spy museum was another favorite.  It is a pay museum about spies and the tools and gadgets they use.  You can get a library card from the Library of Congress.  It is probably too late but you can contact your congressman's office for a tour of the capital.  Take in the mall, the reflecting pool and the Viet Nam Memorial.  I usually work when I am in town but this is the feed back I get from the wife and kids.  Have a great trip.

We took our 7 yr old son to DC for his birthday last year (June 8th) and stayed at Pohick Bay Regional. We spent all of our waking hours (basically) in DC, so we didn't have much use for the campground except for sleeping. Good thing because the bugs could have carried a small child away. Don't know what they were exactly, but they were big and not afraid of humans, and LOVED the light. We couldn't even step into the camper with the lights on because they were so bad. But, it is a nice place to stay, well maintained, decent restrooms, and good sites that are fairly level and private. We spent all of our time at the museums in DC, but Pohick Bay also has fishing if I am not mistaken, so you get get the history & fishing in easily. Pohick is fairly close to a metro station, and the park has good directions to get you there.

lake fairfax regional park. 10 miles W of DC, five miles W of 495 off Rt 7 exit. Water mine water park,(1/2 off admission for campgrounders), fishing lake, bus to Falls Church metro station. Access to historical sites S and W of (think manassas battlefield) town, close to Dulles Airport Smithsonian Air and Space Annex ( acres of inside airplane and space stuff). 2 miles from Tyson's Corner shopping district (mall central). About 6 miles from my house, my dad stays there with the 35' when he comes to visit.

Another vote here for Pohick Bay park if it isn't too late.... you can check our webshots page for lots of pictures of Pohick.   We stay there three or four times a year at least when we need a quick get away.  It's close to home.

Close and easy access to the METRO is Greenbelt NP.  The Metro line takes you to the National Archives which is like 2 or 3 blocks from the mall near the Capitol Building and the Art Museums.

This is one of the few NPs that have HOT showers in each loop.

I saw a black fox also in the evening and there are deer, they came near the trailer in the early morning hours.
Easy Access to the Beltway, fast food, diners and franchise resturaunts, a mall less than a mile from the entrance to the park, campgound is deep inside the park.
