Just got back from a jewel of a State Campground. Salt Rock State
Campground in Conneticut. It's a litte off the beaten path, but
worth the detour, or destination.

The campground itself I learned, was once privately owned. Why the
state took it over was debated; regardless, it's now owned by the
people of Ct.

There are about a dozen full hookup sites. Sites 001-007 are all in
the open and flat, with full hookups. There are several wooded
sites with full hookups and a bunch with just electric and water.
All the sites that I saw (and I'm a wanderer) were nicely spaced and
offered plenty of privacy.

Two pools are available for your summer pleasure. One pool is a
large in ground wader, 3 foot deep for the entire length of the
pool. The second pool starts at 3 foot and goes to 7 foot. Neither
of the pools is large, they are abou the size of a typical hotel
pool.

There is a large recreation field at the center of the campground
with a volleyball net, and a basketball hoop. Not a half court, but
good enought to work on your hook shot. Plenty of trails run in and
around the camp. Many of the sites (most of the sites) were not
used when I was there, so bike riding was great with no foot or
vehicle traffic. Fishing too is available in the nearby river. I
observed two angelers bringing home dinnner; 14-15" trout. I used
the river as a bike riding destination with my two children.

My only complaint about the campground is the condition of the
latrines. There are two in close proximity. Both are in no so good
condition. The state does not have the money (so the Ranger told
me) to keep them as well maintained as they need to be. Several of
us campers helped and made them usable. The showers were, well,
let's just say I used the shower in my Kiwi for the first time for
something other than a hamper.

One last thing, Salt Rock Campground is the only state campground
that allows our four footed children. Just clean up after them so
we don't loose this one!

Hope this help you to make your decision on where to go!

Happy Trails!
