Does anyone have firewood delivered to their campsite?  If so do you find you're saving money doing it this way?

I just called around to see if I could have it done.  I could but there would be a charge.  Long story short, with the little research I did it seems it would be about the same cost to just buy it at the campsite for $7 a bundle.

And by the way, the place I called told me it would be about $50 for a 1/8 cord of pine/fir mix plus a delivery fee.  He said 1/8 cord = 12 bundles at the cg's approximately.  I'll do the math for ya.  12 bundles x $7= $84

$7?  Holy cow.  I've only been to one place the delivers wood on site and it costs $3.50 (no matter delivery or not).  3.50 to 4.00 is average for wood at campgrounds.  Most I've ever seen was $5.

My experience over the last few trips, whether I buy it local before leaving or at the campground, is the price is going up and/or the bundles are getting smaller. :yikes:

With the cost of oil skyrocketing, a lot of people in New England are heading back to wood stoves.  In the 70's, I paid $35  a cord that was cut to length, delivered and stacked and it was seasoned wood.

Today, a cord of seasoned wood can go for as high as $300 a cord.

Neighbor up the street buys truck loads of trees to cut up and sell as cord wood.  He is having a hard time getting the wood and has more customers than he can service.  He has to turn some people away.

Yup, the bundles may get smaller and the price will go up.

The campfire will cost more than the s'mores.

I always buy the wood for the campfire at the campground.  The latest price I paid was $4.00 for ten pieces.  That's probably more than everyone else, but it was dry good wood and it made great double decker smores!

Some nearby county park campgrounds that I frequent have a local entrepreneur who cruises the campground each evening selling firewood.  One row of stack of cured, split wood heaped across a full-size pickup bed is $20, and you will be hard pressed to burn all of it in a 4-day weekend. Their children usually help, and they even neatly stack the wood where you want it.  If you are going to be out of the park, you can pay the park staff and they will deliver it in your absence, or you can call them for a special delivery.  I am more than glad to spend the money for the convenience and to help out a hard-working family earn a a little extra money for their kids

That is a great idea for someone to start a business.  I should suggest that to our home park, and see if they could find someone who would do that.  It would make life easier for everyone and help out some entrepenuer.  The American way at it's best.

Last Labor Day, we stayed at Grayson Highlands State Park in Mouth of Wilson, VA. Most mornings and evenings, the camp hosts came riding around in a John Deere Gator selling ice and firewood. How convenient! We bought a 2 or 3 bags of ice as well as 2 or 3 bundles of firewood during our stay.

I know!  So now you see why I'm looking for options.  $7 for about enough wood to burn for a couple hours.  "Woo hoo, let's party.  Get the smore stuff quick, this fires costing me a grip."

$7 a bundle seems to be the going rate in California.  We belong to NACO/Thousand Trails and they usually have bundles of fire wood at or near the guard stations and they are also $7 a bundle.    We had to cut down a couple of trees in our yard so we have wood to bring with us, but it's almost worth it to purchase it at the campground then you don't have the extra weight to deal with.

I've never had wood delivered to the campsite.  We've always either bought it directly from the camp or bought it nearby and picked it up ourselves.  Seven dollars actually seems reasonable to me.  That's about what we've paid for the last few years.

At State campgrounds here in Michigan, you can usually depend on someone driving through around dusk selling firewood.  Price per bundle seems to be around $4 or $5.  It's usually good dry wood.  If we're camping close to home, we bring our own wood.

We were a little shocked to pay $7 a box at Yellowstone a few weeks ago.  The wood was a little wet too, and tough to get a fire going.

Now that's a place I would go back to.  You have to appreciate good customer service and a fair price these days.
