Brake Repair problem

Hi I have a Jayco 14so with surge brakes and a tandem axle. The dealer told me I need to have the brakes redone including the replacement of the backing plates. I do know that the brake lines broke off (while on a trip to CO).  The quote they gave me (including labor) was $1,000.  I'd like to know if this is a reasonable price and/or if I can do the repair myself (and if so, how much parts might be).  If anyone has done the repair themselves, any tips on how best to do it would also be great!
TIA

Hi Appleweed,
We have a '95 tandem axle Jayco. Don't know how much brake lines would be, but you might look at this link

to get an idea of backing plate with wheel cylinders, shoes, etc. might run. Not sure if your newer Jayco uses the same parts as our older.
If you can replace the entire brake units (4), find necessary replacement brake lines and install, then you would have to refill with brake fluid and bleed the entire system. We stick the draw bar with the trailer hitch ball into the coupler to apply pressure and bleed each wheel cylinder until no more air.
Good luck, Steve
How did you loose the brake lines and why do you have to replace the 4 brake units?

Can you do "it" yourself?   Depends on your automotive repair skill level, and what you've got for a tool box and tools.  Generally, I'd say brake work of this magnitude isn't for a novice.  The fact that you haven't pulled the drums and inspected them yourself sort of indicates you may not be a good candidate for the DIY end of things.

If you've got a shop quoting you "replacement of everything" then I'd say you're either about to get hosed, or you have some really screwed up brakes.

You might take the time to get a second estimate from another shop.
