This little bugger (5+ft) paid us a visit Sunday morning at our campsite.
Oh, you should have heard DD scream...SNAKE!!!!!
And of coarse only thing my DW dislikes more than snakes are, well...SNAKES!!
DD and I followed it for a while, keeping our distance, (at one point I am pretty sure it was following us), Both of us were amazed at how it glidded along the ground over rocks and limbs effortlessly.
Very cool and something different from the usual skunks and deer that are in the area.

Anyone know what kind of snake it is??

That's just a little ol' rattle snake..... :D

What else would you expect to find in AZ????

But no rattles?

Cool looking snake and nice find!  Not sure I would have the courage to follow it though.  The venum won't kill you, but rots the meat out of the bit area like there's no tomorrow.

This http://www.reptilesofaz.com/Snakes-Subpages/h-p-decurtatus.html looks similar to yours.  The description of 20" total length doesn't fit yours, though.

This one http://www.reptilesofaz.com/Snakes-Subpages/h-p-catenifer.html would be more likely, AZ's longest snake.

Was it in AZ that you saw it?

Sorry to disagree with Wavery but I think dthurk is right it looks like a gopher snake, not a rattler. Good on you for letting it be. Down here it seems every snake people see is a "moccasin" (ts usually not) and they want to kill it. Unless its in my rig, I usually leave them alone.

Has the coloring of a Gopher Snake but sure has the head of a Rattler.

If he's a Gohper Snake.......please send him and a few of his brothers to me :D Our Fallbrook property is infested with Gophers and our tenants think they're "Cute". :screwy:   :banghead:

Location was in the Bradshaw Mountains,
90 miles North of Phx. a little South of Prescott Az..

Yep, I'd have to agree with dthurk on this one.
Gopher snake sounds good to me.
I talked to the camp host about it and he said that they don't get to many snake sightings in the area, maybe three in the last 5 years so we feel lucky to have had a chance to view it.
He did however say that there has been a large cat or cats in the area feeding on the deer but no one had seen them, only tracks, very strange screams coming down the canyon in the middle of the night (heard those a few times) and a lot of ripped apart dear... :yikes: I always thought the strange sounds in the middle of the night could have been a Big Foot tribe heading south for the winter...I liked that better than big cats.
Now I am a little nervous about going up into the mountains alone panning for gold.
Thanks for the replies, and watch your step.
You never know what is lurking in the brush or behind that tree. ;)

ahhh!  I am not sure how I would've reacted after seeing that!  And my oh my the camoflage on him is amazing in some of your pics.  I'd so accidentally step on him, lol!
Once, on the way up to Elk Neck State Park, my mom called me from her site to tell me that they had just spotted a GIGANTIC, thick, black snake on my waiting site!  I almost turned around, I am such a wimp!  I know the snakes are out there, I just try to forget about them!
