We went on our annual family camping trip with the entire family this past weekend to Tugaloo state park here in Ga off Lake Hartwell.  We knew we had visitors over night as you could here them walking aroung the camp at different hours.  We were awoken to a terrible scent on Sunday morning!  My moms dog slept in her tent with her and was sprayed by a skunk through the tent.  Totally unprovoked.   What a way to start your day and finish a great trip.  Tent is a total loss as are any blankets that the dog was laying on.

By the way contrary to what you think a skunk smells like it doesnt quite smell that way till it has had a few hours!!!

Our dog was sprayed once at 3am.  There is nothing like waking up to that smell!!  Oh its horrible.  Good luck on that!!!

I discovered that .357 round through their little skunk craniums will prevent the discharge of any noxious fumes. :yikes:

My brother had a skunk under his hood of car and when he started the motor yep you guessed it he got skunked and it took months before his car lost that smell...Are we having fun yet......Hahaaaaaa :D

My dog got sprayed a few years ago....found the best thing to use was white vinegar - worked quite well at getting rid of the odor.

I am still trying to get the smell out of my nose though.  I will never forget that smell ever!

That stinks,

My dog has be sprayed more than once and the best way to get stick out is hydogen peroxide, baking soda and dishwashing soap.  Make a past out of the ingredients and spread it on you pet.  DO NOT PUT ON THE FACE, can burn the eyes.  Let the paste do its thing and then rinse off.

For the face believe it or not, use an unscented douce.  Spray the face just watch out for the eyes.  My dog has sleep in our bedroom the same night he got sprayed and you could not tell.

Good luck

Luckily for us neither of our dogs has gotten sprayed, but 3 others have been while camping with us...on our site. Due to experience on everyone elses dog but our own :D  this is the recipe that works quite well  (or you can use ready mixed disposable douche)

The  Skunk  Remedy  Recipe

In a plastic bucket, mix well the following ingredients:

1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide

 1/4 cup of baking soda

1 to 2 teaspoons liquid soap

for very large pets one quart of tepid tap water  may be added to enable complete coverage.

Wash pet promptly and thoroughly, work the solution deep into the fur.  Let your nose guide you, leave the solution on about 5 minutes or until the odor is gone.  Some heavily oiled areas may require a "rinse and repeat" washing.

Skunks usually aim for the face, but try to keep the solution out of the eyes - it stings.  If you have any cuts on your hands you might want to wear latex gloves for the same reason.

After treatment, thoroughly rinse your pet with tepid tap water.

Pour the spent solution down the drain with running water.

NEVER, ever, store mixed solution in a closed bottle,   sprayer, etc.  Pressure will build up until the container   bursts.  This can cause severe injury.

While there are many home remedies, there is one that vets, groomers, and pet stores all recommend more than everything else combined.

Of course, I doubt any burley rednecks are going to go out and get it.

Massengill Douche.

If you don't know what it is, you better get your mother's permission.

A typical dog/skunk encounter takes about a case.

I would love to know what you found offensive about the term "burley redneck."

Not me, I'd go buy a candy bar, and when the clerk said, "Did you find everything you were looking for?"  I'd say, "No, I need a case of MASSENGIL DOUCHE."

That way the checker would get to announce it over the PA system.  Then when some little pimple-face brought it up, I'd baulk at the price, dig around for a coupon I didn't have, hold up the line further, and ask for a manager because that price didn't seem right.

Then I'd say, "Nevermind.  She can wait 'till it goes on sale then."  And walk out. :D

We actually just went with what the Ranger had told us and used the old tomato juice.  I just drowned the dog over and over again till I used up what I had and then let it kinda dry up on the dog.  An against the rulls shower is the campgroud and a cleaning up of the shower stall and all was good again.  Now the tent and blankets the dog was in was another story.  All the blankets were washed in Amonia and the tent aired out for 2 weeks.

All is well again!
