Now with the new camper tires for Christmas and the gas prices looking MUCH better, I'm getting this "itch" to pull the little Starcraft west. In past years have made it to Colorado but this time I'd like to take in Montana, Idaho and some Pacific northwest. - I know in the middle of the night I hear some of those western trout calling to me -

Anyway, January is the planning month. The rig I have does fairly well for highway gas mileage, especially for the flat lands. It do consume more fuel in the highlands but still really not all that bad as towing goes ~

The big plan would be to meander along here and there, stopping off to see a few things but mostly to wet a fly line ... ya know?

There is some great fly fishin' in the eastern Sierras of California.  Not sure if you want to head this far west but there are some great streams and lakes between Bishop and Lake Tahoe.  Our favorite (dh is an angler) is Bridgeport and Virginia Lakes.

No, no stay away it's terrible out here.  My Nissan Frontier gets 15 MPG going uphill and 20 MPG coming back down towing our Santa Fe.  We were in Garner, Montana just north of Yellowstone for July 4th.  There was no fishing due to global warming which caused heavy snows, a late spring and high and muddy waters.  The fishing was scheduled to open about mid-July.  Terribly disappointing so we were forced to play tourist and look at the geysers/bears/buffalo/moose etc. inside the park.  Do not know if there was fishing available in other parts of Montana.  That being said, we are planning on going back again this year, the last four states we need to visit are in the Pacific Northwest.

Thanks for the tip on the fishing. Could work it out to be heading Montana way in early August.

I have an '02 GMC pick'em-up, short bed, regualr cab, automatic 2whl drive, small V-8. Flat country driving will deliver an honest 20 mpg @ 70 mph. Towing will get 19 @ 65 mph. The mountains will knock that off 2 to 3 MPG.

The Starcraft's GVWR is 2100 and when loaded for a trip I'm close to max ... last time I had it weighed it came out 2,012 lbs and I'm sure I've added a item or two since.

Here's our daghter's place in Bridgeport:

Here is Silver Lake between Bridgeport & Mammoth:

Here I am flyfishing in the stream near Silver Lake:

If you head this way, you can teach me how to do it right.  :D

When ever ... where ever, an old fly fisherman goes, there has to be some results, too!
