We are planning a trip to SoCal in early June. We are still undecided whether or not we will be camping on this trip. We are planning on going to Universal Studios and Knott's Berry Farm. We would appreciate any suggestions for cg's we can use as a base. We would consider a commercial cg since this is a vacation trip more than it is a camping trip. Someplace that has a pool or beach nearby would be great. We like going to CA in early June since CA schools are still in session while our kids get out in May. It cuts down on the crowds.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thats a great time to plan a trip!   Those 2 parks are about an hour away from each other and there isnt any place near hollywood to camp so I would suggest you look in the disney thread in this forum because those parks are pretty close to each other and take some of the leads they are talking about.  Have a great trip :)

That's going to be a fun trip.  If you can swing it, get a 2 day pass for Disneyland and California Adventure, and go to both.  CA Adventure is really cool.

We asked the kids where they wanted to go and surprisingly they said Universal. The last CA vacation we had we went to both Universal and Disney. I thought they would ask for Disney again but they surprised us. They aren't quite old enough for Magic Mtn yet so we'll save that one for a few years.

Did you guys go to CA Adventure that previous trip?  If not, it's completely different from DL......100 times better, I think.  It's all "California" themed, so there's an area dedicated to the Sierra Nevada Mtn's with a full-on fire-fighter/ranger station tower, and a river raft ride themed on the Kern River rafting trips....an aero-space area....an area themed on the Monterey Bay and Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk....a Hollywood Movie Set area....etc.  It's really pretty cool.

I like Universal too though.  I'm not so big on Magic Mtn. because everytime I've been, it's basically been a day of hanging out with all the gang bangers who have year round passes and nothing better to do.

If you ever get up to the San Jose area, "Great America" is also an outstanding amusement park, and it's been there since the early/mid '70's.

OC Campers

My kids when they were younger enjoyed Knott's Berry Farm instead of Disney.  A lot less crowded.   Universal is fun too.  We haven't been there in years.   Depending on how far you want to drive, you could almost stay at one of the state parks along the beach.  Big Sycamore Canyon and Leo Carillo are nice choices.  They are not directly on the beach (across the highway) but a quick walk and you are there.  It might take you an hour to get to Universal depending on traffic.

My opinion on a campground would be the following:

Bolsa Chica State Beach

Close to Knotts (15 miles), not so close to Universal (43 miles).  But hey, it's on the beach, and a NICE one too!!  IF there are any sites available, this would be a great place to wake up in the AM.

If memory serves me correctly, they have water and electric hookups there as well, no sewer.

Here are two CG's within less then a hours drive. KOA  and EastShore
Both are clean parks
Good Luck and have fun  ;)

Check out Newport Dunes, a little pricey but many locals go there to stay by the beach.
