Hello all, I was wondering I could change the thermostat out on the camper with one at lets say Home Depot or Lowes. The one in the camper is not working any longer. I know the units at the hardware stores are 24 volt. I do not use a battery on my camper any longer and I run off the converter only. Thanks!

yes you can.  However if you use a 24volt thermostat on a 12 volt system you may need to use batteries to operate the thermostat.  I am assuming you will use a digital thermostat.  Some of the nicer thermostats from for example White Rodgers or Honeywell use what is called power stealing.  If you have a thermostat that utilizes power stealing it will trickle mili-volts between the terminals to charge a capacitor and you will not need batteries to operate the thermostat, otherwise plan on replacing the batteries once a year and have extra batteries on stand by. There is a thermostat manufacture "Hunter" that makes very cheep thermostat sold at Home Depot.  Some of the Hunter thermostats will fit in the recess that many of the thermostats are installed in.  Don't buy a non digital thermostat that uses mercury to control the heater if you do and you unit is not perfectly level the thermostat will be out of calibration. Hope this helps and good luck.

Yes, this helps out a lot, I appreciate the info as I do have an extra stat that is digital!  Great info!
