OC Campers

We camp with our 3 dogs.  As soon as the camper door is open they are ready to go (even if I am just getting something out of the camper).

 I don't think I have ever seen a cat on a leash (at least not happily:D )

We (COTOC) have several people that camp with their pets, dogs, cats, and even a bird.  My cats stay at home, but I do take one of the dogs camping.:)

Here's my cat ..."Hink" ... a neutered male ... who should have been named Snoopy, along with a snake he's managed to find and is in the process of making the snake very, very angry. Boy, can that cat move FAST!

It took about a month to get him to walk on the leash. :)

Our orange cat, Pixel, LOVES the camper.... in camp driveway.

He also loves to explore the van whenever he can, however, once the engine starts, he takes off.  (He was a neighborhood stray we adopted, so being scarce around running vehicles is a GOOD thing for him)

I've thought about taking him camping, but since he is a very independant, indoor/ outdoor cat who has always owned this small neighborhood,  I'm very leary of taking him out of his known territory.  He can be very smart about getting out when he wants to - and I'm too fearful of losing him in a strange campground.

However, Fizzy, our Golden Retriever, like most goldens, makes an excellent camping companion. Fizz is quiet, calm, well behaved and well trained.  Her thick, soft fur and teddy bear face and demeanor attract the  campground kids - she's a great 'icebreaker' and loves attention. She is quite a 'momma's girl', though, and will stay in the campsite without a leash, seldom venturing further than 10 ft from my side.  Maybe a bit further if the whole family is spread out and she is keeping tabs on all of us.  She gets along well with all other animals, and only barks when we are actively 'playing' with her.  She sleeps  soundly in the car, tent or camper - and rides calmly in a canoe.

Fizzy is the fourth golden retreiver camping companion for our family - all our goldens have been great campers. ( Our last Golden, Tristan, Was even our Boy Scout troop's unofficial mascot - Tristan went on many campng trips and activities with the troop.  The boys all loved having him along on our adventures)  If anyone ever wanted a pet that is great for kids, outdoors and family activities, I would strongly recommend Golden Retreivers.

Over the years, we've camped with our dogs, with no problems and lots of enjoyment.  Now however, depending upon our sight-seeing plans, heat, we will sometimes leave our dog with my daughter while we camp.  If the dog comes with us, we always carry the kennel.

Lots of full timers camp with their cats, have cat strollers, walk them on a leash, and the cats seem to adapt somewhat to their restricted freedom!

DW and I had to decide if we wanted to leave out cat, Angel, with friends for four months or take her with us.  We figured it wouldn't be fair to take her back after four months so we took her with us.

In the truck, we start her out in a carrier for a while and then open the door.  She is content to climb on the center armrest or under the back seat.  When we stop for a break, we put her in the trailer with her litter box and some food.  Then it is back into the carrier to get back to the truck and off we go.

It was  a bit pricey taking her down as we stopped at two motels.  One charged us $15 extra for Angel and the other $10.  I told the guy at the desk that I didn't see why the extra charge since she was not going to use any linen and I was bringing her own toilet.  Still had to pay. :)

We tried the harness on her but she just slips out of it at will.  So we switched to a collar but it is the breakaway kind for kitty safety so that did not do well.  She has even learned how to take that off when she is tired of it.  Pulls on the id tag.

We decided to give her the run of the trailer but keep her in.  Well, she wasn't having anything to do with that.  I left the slide open on the door, the one that covers the handle, with the door open.  Bingo she was  out the door and on her own.

She was outside for about an hour and then right back in.

So we have taken a chance and when she wants out, she goes out but she also comes in on her own.  She is developing her own routine and training us well.

At the cg we are at now, there are some stray cats so we just leave the door open after we let her out so she can retreat safely.
She has done so a couple of times.

She seems to adapt quickly to change and is more content knowing that she can go out.  She was starting to get bored and taking it out on the furniture and curtains.  We have two scratching posts but she wouldn't use them.  Preferred the furniture.  Now that we let her out, she uses the scratching posts and leaves the furniture alone.  Who says cats don't rule?

By the way, she is about 7 years old and is an indoor/outdoor cat.

She is turning into a very content camping cat.

How are the owners?

Gene,
Hope all is well with you & Terry. I hope to see you this summer. Any chance going to rallies or camping North? Are you in Florida now? If so I can send some of the snow I shoveled from my sidewalk or car to you if you miss it.

Wolf...As you know we have 2 dogs; a Rot/Pit (Buddy) and a big fat Chihuahua (Killer).   We had to put Buddy down in June due to cancer and Killer was so lonely that I rescued, from the Pound, an 11 year old black Chihuahua that is about half the size, smaller, than Killer.   We take them with us whenever we camp.   About 2 years ago when my Son moved into a new house I took their 18 year old cat because they moved next to a very busy street and were afraid that he would get run over, even though he was an outdoor cat.  We only had him a couple of weeks before we were to go camping so we put him in a crate and took him with us.  I didn't want to leave him at home with the other 2 cats because they weren't used to each other yet.  His crate was between the two of us in the front seat and it became our arm rest.  The dogs were in the back seat.   It turned out he was a very good camping cat.  He stayed inside the 5er the first trip, but after that I putchased a light cat tie down leash and I tied him up on it when we were outside.  He hung out with the dogs.   The last time you camped with us at Russian River, he was along and he got out on Friday night and was wondering around in the bushes.  Here I am worried all to H---, calling him trying not to wake the neighbors.  I couldn't catch him and next thing I know Sal tells me he was waitng on the 5er step to get in!!!   I was so glad he was back I forgot to scold him for running off.  We left him home this last time, but have purchased a large dog cage/kennel to put him and the other cat in so I can take them along too.   We will see how that works since they are both male cats and they growel at each other across the bed where they sleep during the day.  I love taking all my fur-babis along with me.

HI Mike

Terry and I are in St. Augustine until April.  Spent a month in St. Pete in December so we could share Christmas with DD.

Not sure what the summer plans are due to a back issue.

I have been keeping a watch on the weather back home and I am glad that I am here.  As you mature and put more miles on the body, cold and snow become less appealing.

Take care and stay warm.
