Hi all,

My family of four 38,38,6,4 are planning a trip to North Carolina. We'll stay in the Ashville and then Charollete areas. We'll go horseback riding in Ashville and we're considering the Natahala train ride. Does anyone familiar with this area have any other suggestions for activities? Also is there some well kept secret for campsites in these area? I usually like to stay in state parks but we're used to having electricity and it seems that none of the parks in this area have electricity.

Thanks in advance.

We're big fans of the Tsali Recreation Area just outside Natahala - great hiking, mountain biking and camping. You might also enjoy the train that runs out of Dillsboro, NC called the Great Smokey Mountain Railway.

Couple of links for Natahala-
Main site here: http://ncnatural.com/NCUSFS/Nantahala/tsali.html
Another popular site: http://www.main.nc.us/graham/hiking/tsali.html

Just a little farther east, near Charlotte, is Uwharrie National Forest - great place for horse riding and camping. Our favorite site in NC in the middle of the state - http://www.cs.unca.edu/nfsnc/recreation/uwharrie/

Finally, south of Charlotte, in S.C., is Poinsett State Park - hands down our favorite camping site in the south - http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/park-finder/state-park/662.aspx

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

Jamie and Kat

One of our favorites is Kings Mountain State Park

Activities at the park include: fishing, equestrian and hiking trails, the Living History Farm, and the park is located adjacent to Kings Mountain National Military Park.
Although it is located in South Carolina, its just across the state line from North Carolina close to Interstate 85 and Highway 74.

Thank you both for great suggestions. We're still in the planning phase but will be making reservations shortly.

I'll try to figure out how to post pics when we get back.

Thanks again.

We love camping in NC, but you're right not a lot of places w/ elec.  As far as places w/out elec we love Brevard(south of asheville).  Davidson River campground at brevard.  Lot's of fishing, hiking, biking, whatever.  Dupont state forest is nearby which has tons of waterfalls(as well as the brevard area).

A great place to camp that is about 30 minutes north of Charlotte is Dan Nicholas Park.  It is a county park in Salisbury and has lots of things for kids to do.  It has water and electric but no sewer.  It does have a dump station.  Large woody sites.  You can visit their website at //www.dannicholas.net.  Also there is the North Carolina Transportation Musuem located in Spencer, about 15 minutes from the park that focuses on trains.  These are great places for children your age.  Schools from many counties in NC visit these places for school field trips because the nature center and lots of things for the kids.
