Our family is looking to spend some time at Colonial Williamsburg this July, can anyone recommend a campground that is close to this great historic attraction.
Thank you,

Try sending HersheyGirl an email.  She camped at a county park near there last June.  Have a great trip.:)

Try American Heritage CG.  I stayed at Anvil CG last time, you DO NOT want to go there.  I drove through American Heritage, it looked clean and well kept.

I have stayed at both and would vote for American Heritage even though it is a bit further out.  They were redoing the bathrooms a couple of years ago.  If you have a dog, they have a dog run.

Only use Anvil if you want to be closer to the attractions.  Train tracks are about 30 feet from some sites and the trains do run at night.  Sites are small and some are tricky to get into.

I have also stayed at the two KOA's and they are okay but nothing great.

Try Newport News Park.  It's a short 15 min. drive to the historic area.

Avoid Anvil b/c it's next to busy railroad tracks.

Thanks gang,

It's funny, I used google earth to check out a couple of campgrounds and the railway tracks running next to Anvil stuck out like a sore thumb. Thanks for confirming. I guess I won't be staying there. I like trains but I don't think I want to sleep with them.

After reading the recommendations I checked out Newport News Park and American Heritage House and both look to be nice places to Pop Up for a bit over a week.

Thanks again.

You may want to look into the state parks in the area.

Quote from: CajunCamperIf you would prefer a state park, you may want to look into York River State Park in Virginia, it's 11 miles from Colonial Williamsburg.

Good Luck

I looked at York River State Park, but their web site says that it is only a day use park. No Camping.
To bad.

If you dont mind a few miles of driving check out Chippokes State Park. It is a beautiful park. Loop A is the older side more "camping". Loop B is newer with paved sites. Chippokes is south of the James River. Need to take a ferry across the river and it runs 24/7. Here are a few pics of when my wife and I and some friends went down this past November. Here is the link to the Chippokes site.

Thank you hvac1877,

It looks like my kind of place, but the PU is going to be used more as a motel on this trip and we  would like to stay closer to the attractions in Williamsburg. I don't want to be spending 1 to 1 1/2 hours travelling to the attractions that we want to see. I'm guessing that we will stay at  American Heritage campground. It's looks like about a 20 minute drive to where we want to spend most of our time.
With the photos that you have sent gives me an excuse to come back.

Thanks again.

You can be in Williamsburg in about 20 to 30 minutes from Chippokes. Not far at all. It is only 14 miles from Chippokes to downtown Williamsburg. Also I have stayed at the KOA in Williamsburg. Nice campground and close to everything. Here is there link.

Hi hvac1877,

I wasn't thinking so much about the drive, I was thinking more about wait times for the ferry and the time that takes to get across.
I have thought about staying at the KOA and really not sure about them. I once stayed at a KOA up here in Canada and really didn't like it at all, it was very very clean and had all the amenities it's just that the sites were tiny, Our picnic table was about 3 feet away from our neighbours picnic table. Heck we were so close that I could hear them slurping their soup at lunch time. Ever since that experience I really not sure if I want to stay at another KOA, but after reading your note I may have to rethink this.
