Firewood for the group

Hi All,
I just spoke with the campground about supplying the group with firewood for the week. The campground will deliver however much wood we would like to the group campfire area but, it will be the shrink-wrapped bundles of wood sold from the camp store at $4.75 a bundle. They did not act agreeable to an outside source delivering wood for us. Does the group want to pay this much for wood for the week? Any other suggestions?

Tracy is there any place in the area that maybe we can pick up (as in buy) some wood ourselves.  I could pull the drawers out of the back long enough to get some wood.

Too bad this is not along the Robert C Byrd Applachian highway system...they had LOTS of wood along that where the old roads (33 and 55) run and are not expressway...was through there last Wednesday. They are working to build an express way...knew I should ahve loaded up the back of the truck....or get shot trying....

Cheryl I buy fire wood from a guy that gets it from a factory that makes rail road ties.  He gets the ends of the rail road ties that are cut off.  The size of the pieces vary in each cage from little scrap stuff to nice size chunks.  He has cages for $20 that (2) may be enough wood for our group, for the week.  I think a 6 foot trailer load of wood is $40 and an 8 foot bed load is $50.  It is self serve for the $20 cages, and usually he has one 6 foot trailer out by the road.  It is all hard wood.  I also work with a guy that sells regular fire wood, but I think that might be a little more expensive.:)

We camped this past weekend at the local state park and I paid $10 for a little bundle of wood and i had to pick it up, no delivery service, if that makes you feel better about paying 4.75 for a bundle. I will say that the money collected was a fundraiser for a local boy scout troop.

Hi Tracy,
Thanks for the info. Your deal sounds much better than the campgrounds'. How far away is the wood man from the campground? Would he deliver? On a Saturday or Sunday? If it is feasible, one of my group could go there on Sunday or Monday with a pickup truck and get wood. Please let me know if any of these options are workable! Thanks,
Cheryl

He is probably close enough that one of us could run and get more if we would run out.

Sugarbugga, OUCH.  I am guessing that you don't have big campfires in that park.  Where are you from and WELCOME to PUT!:)

It is close enough that we could go and get more wood.  I am guessing it is about a 20 minute drive.  I don't think they deliver.  It is a self serve place that works on the honor system.  You go over by the house and pay, then go and load the wood.  If we had a few people to help load it (gloves are recommended because of splinters), it would not take long.  The next time I go that way I will take a picture of the wood so you can see what you are getting.  I don't think the campground can say anything if we bring it in ourselves. :)

Ouch is right but i was willing to pay it, plus it the money was going to the boy scouts. The wood that we brought with us wouldn't burn. We had cut down some trees a few years ago when we put in our pool, waited till all the sap ran out of them then cut it up and it has been sitting at the bottom of the hill ever since. When we bought the camper, we decided to split it up for firewood for when we camped. Thought it would be perfect. I had made a deal with my oldest daughter, she wanted a new swim suit and to pay me back she had to do chores around the house. When my husband had found out, he said that she could carry the firewood up that he had split and stack it up next to the wall. I think she put a curse on the firewood for having to carry that wood up the hill (something along the lines of "I hate this wood and I hope that it don't burn and the smoke burns there eyes").
The wood wouldn't burn and the smoke was awful. I have the camper open now trying to get rid of the smell.

Thanks for the info Tracy,
That sounds like the best idea. If they are open on Sunday, we could go over with some of the guys and a truck or two (we'll have four F350 long-bed trucks available) and we can load some up for the group. How does that sound?

Cheryl it is self service, so you can get it any time.  Can't wait for the rally!

Cheryl

Thanks Tracy,
I know you had said in an earlier response that they were self-serve but around here that doesn't always mean on Sunday. Thanks for looking out for the group!
